Wonderful book Caraka Samhita explains how to live long!

S. Nagarajan

Everybody would like to live long happily.
But the tragedy is most of the people die very young due to very many diseases.
Here comes the Caraka Samhita to help people live long.

Agnivesa’s Caraka Samhita consists of 120 chapters. Caraka is a great sage. The very name Caraka is derived from the root ‘car’ meaning to move about. He has propagated his knowledge to all the people especially for the patients by moving throughout the length and breadth of the country – India.

He preached the people about Life. Life is of four types.
They are
1) Hita (useful or advantageous)
2) Ahita (harmful or disadvantageous)
3) Sukha (Happy)
4) Dukha (Unhappy or miserable)

According to Caraka man should live a full span of his life happily which is 100 years.

In order to achieve this long and healthy life he handed over Ayurveda to the entire humanity.

That science is designated as Ayurveda where advantageous and disadvantageous as well as happy and unhappy states of life along with what is good and bad for life, its measurement and life itself are described.

Ayurveda deals with all the four types of life.
The term Ayus stands for the combination of the body, sense organs, mind and soul.
Thus Auyrveda stands for the knowledge of life.

It is being an indispensable guide for health and virtuous acts, this Ayurveda is sacred par excellence and is honored by all knowledgeable people of the world.

No gift can surpass the gift of life.

What is a happy life?
Caraka gives a clearcut definition of Happy Life.
Those who are not afflicted with physical and mental ailments, who are endowed with youth, enthusiasm, strength, variety, reputation, manliness, boldness, knowledge of arts and sciences, senses, objects of senses, ability of the sense organs, riches and various luxurious articles for enjoyment, who achieve whatever they want and move as they like, lead a happy life, others lead an unhappy life.
Ayurveda has no beginning and no end.
It deals with things that are inherent in Nature.
Such natural manifestations are eternal.
Caraka Samhita narrates types of diseases and medicines and therapies to cure them.
It also gives guidelines to lead a life which is free from any disease.
This book also gives the requirements of a good physician and his duties.
Caraka Samhita has been translated in English by very many authors and those who are interested in a disease free healthy long life should obtain a copy and read it
