Flash Fiction
The Heist

“Wow look at this!” Frank yelled to Todd.

“What are you doing in the kitchen? There is nothing in a kitchen that we can hock.”

“But look at this, it’s like a grill but right on the stove,” Frank hollered out, “I bet you can grill hotdogs right in the kitchen!”

“Great, get out here and help me.”

Frank came to the kitchen door, still smiling, “Fine, you go hunt for jewelry upstairs, I’ll do here and that office, K?”

Todd grumped off up the stairs. Frank was such a child at times. He spent an inordinate amount of time in these empty houses playing with the kids toys, and the parent’s toys sometimes. He even stopped to play the piano once, it scared Todd to death suddenly hearing this honkytonk music coming up from the living room! Fortunately, Todd had a good eye for small expensive things too, in the end, he was worth it. They made good money together. But could be so annoying.

Todd found some really good things upstairs and by the time he came down Frank had a bag full too, plus had just jimmied open a locked drawer in the office. Cash! They pulled over two thousand dollars of undoubtedly untraceable cash out of the drawer. Now they were both grinning.

As they left the house, suddenly Frank stopped. “I forgot my hot dogs!”

“I thought I’d try that kitchen grill; I was making us hotdogs for lunch!”

They turned back toward the house, but now they could see a swirling ring of smoke seeping out the big kitchen window.

“Oh well, we can buy lunch out now anyway…” Frank laughed, clapping Todd on the back.

Todd just sighed.
