reflections about my father and his absence from my life
Daddy, I know you love me,
But you seem so far away.
You missed my growing up.
That little girl’s long gone today.

I was in band for four long years.
How many concerts were you at?  None.
Scholar’s Bowl was three years long.
Tournaments you saw? One.
(and you had to leave halfway through)

You weren’t there for the “Hands off!” glare
On the night of my first date.
There’s a long-ass list of the stuff you missed,
So let me tell it to you straight.

When you see me again half a year from now,
You might be a little bit numb.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t recognize
The woman I’ve become.
