The best things in life are free
I gather gold
from groves of autumn aspen,
yellow coins that spin and glint
in quickening wind.

I mine diamonds
from frost-rimed grass,
gray-green blades that shimmer
in sympathy with moon.

I sift through sun-warmed sand
for mother of pearl,
iridescence tucked in mollusk shells
or swirling on surf-churned bubbles.

I tally wealth on paper,
jot measured lines in columns,
sum up treasures of memory
in rows of scanned feet.

When accounting is done,
I give all away,
await the returns.
