A brief love affair
Her heart fluttered as he passed by.
Something made him stop. What was that? He must go back.
Her body shivered as he neared.
So lovely. His thoughts became confused as he stopped close to her.
They looked at each other. Mesmerized.
He stepped towards her.
She retreated, but not too far.
Again, he approached her.
This time she stayed, her body tingling at the nearness of him.
They breathed in the scent of each other.
And thus, the dance began.
Slow at first. Getting to know one another.
Colors became more vibrant.
Flowers bloomed beneath their feet.
Sound was diminished, the rustle of leaves on a summer breeze.
Time lost all meaning.
Their pace quickened. Touching, yet not touching.
Their hearts melding together to become one.
The tempo intensified.
Their bodies became one, learning the feel of each other.
Nothing existed but the two of them.
Such beauty, such loveliness, such wonder.
The dance ended.
Their bodies still touched. Trembling from the encounter.
They were one.
A sound penetrated their world.
They knew what it was. Their bodies tensed.
Too late for both of them to escape.
He stepped forward. Determined to save her.
She held her breath, gripped with fear.
He stood his ground, unflinching. He knew what was coming.
The snap of a twig. Another sound, too horrible to mention.
He was gone.
She took flight.
What they had shared was perfect, but not destined to last.
She spread her wings, gliding by the rose bush.
The scene of the dance, the place of the loss of him.
The lizard waited for her return. Or, perhaps, for another.
She flew away, her colors bright in the sunlit sky.
