Hail to the final shuttle launch.

From Robert Goddard* in a cherry tree,
to slip the surly bonds and set us free;
the rocket appears in a blaze of light
to navigate with gyroscope in-flight.

From Redstone-Atlas-Centaur-Gemini,
all of these rockets that take to the sky;
and now with shuttle poised there at the cape,
one more salute ere you make your escape!

Hail thee and farewell to the Shuttle Show,
cheers and applause from us good folk below;
you’ve given us views of the moon and stars,
a stepping stone on the pathway to Mars.

Hail thee and farewell to the Shuttle Show,
the final launch and we will miss you so;
a plume of smoke with your galvanized glare,
among the stars we’ll always see you there.

Though two of you were never to return,
from tragedy we can slow down to learn;
when lives are given in a forward breech,
such precious souls in memory will reach.

And so as you await your final climb,
to bend earth’s orbit for another time;
the engines ignite to blaze the frontier,
our smiles upon you, moist with a tear.

Hail thee and farewell to the Shuttle Show,
cheers and applause from us good folk below;
you’ve given us views of the moon and stars,
a stepping stone on the pathway to Mars.

Hail thee and farewell to the Shuttle Show,
not a bad spaceship--sufficient airflow;
you bore the Hubble so we all could see
into the eyes of God’s eternity.

*Robert Goddard is the father of modern rocketry.
