A poem about sleepless nights and relationships
I'm so happy you can sleep
soundly next to me
while I stare at the walls
and remember the day.

Your hair splayed out
against the grey
pillowcase, deep breathing,
the peaceful state
between twilight
and daybreak.

My mind spins of
brighter colors than
the shadows dancing
along the wall from
headlights of people
living distinctly
different lives.

An image of hardwood
floors and sunflower
fields beyond a kitchen
window that never
existed in the first place
taunt my weathered
thoughts with
harsh condemnation.

But for the moment I
couldn't be happier
that you can sleep
soundly next to me,
unknowing, serene
against the backdrop
of my despondency.
