Storms should only last a brief time, but sometimes life makes changes we do not like.

Dark clouds gathered in the distance
growing larger day by day,
then drifting by us harmlessly
as they went on their merry way.

But from out the back a sneak attack
put our life through twirling loops,
and churned our peaceful home life
through children’s playing hoops.

Lightning flashed across the sky
while thunder roared all round
heavy rain came belting down
on our parched and dried out ground.

Water soaked through everything,
it sneaked beneath closed doors,
and made my shed a soggy mess
where I hadn’t cleaned the floors.

The cold arrived with the wet
and my old fingers nearly froze,
and I lit the fire regardless
of a cold and runny nose.

The cats are huddled by the fire
to keep their fur coats warm
but I keep going out and in,
doing chores, at dusk or dawn.

Those black clouds are still waiting
for reinforcements to arrive,
but in small patches here and there
blue sky keeps my hopes alive.

The storms are not so vicious
now the clouds are scattered wide,
the howling winds have weakened too
though I feel their thrust inside.

I wait and wonder what comes next
to upset our crazy, twisted life,
Will this unsettled weather leave,
or give us some added strife?

My thoughts are so depressing,
stressed out by life’s cruel blast,
I wonder when this strife will end;
one year has already passed.
