Reason and emotion.

These are the best of times, they really are, if you can stand that war
raging constantly, the campaign within, the clash of jackal and dove.
Emotion is the jackal, reason is the dove--and they fight, they
battle, they tear at the very fabric of self with raging sorties
of differing philosophies.  Forced into an uneasy truce with our skulls,
they each want to wear the best clothes.  Emotion snaps its fingers and
runs to the door; reason uses the telephone.  Emotion is fond of knee-jerks
while reason prefers facial muscles.  They are forced to hold hands while looking
in opposite directions.  One eats slowly while the other slurps soup, one makes love
while the other has sex, one applauds while the other one woofs, one promotes
while the other pulls rank, one contends while the other contains, one is chance
while the other is change, one is level while the other is steep,
one fends off while the other finds out.

One impresses while the other impugns, one involves while the other indicts,
one packs a lunch while the other goes hungry, one checks in while the other rejects,
one learns daily while the other one nods, one is balance while the other one falls,
one diverges while the other connects, one shuts off while the other finds life,
one takes notice while the other ignores, one cleans up while the other
smears grease, one scales mountains while the other one sleeps,
one expands while the other contracts.

One extols while the other one pans, one is partial while
the other is total, one chops wood while the other leaves town,
one flies straight while the other one veers, one blends juice while the
other drips oil, one upholds while the other one breaks, one consoles while
the other one teases, one attempts while the other one flees, one invests while
the other one shrugs, one brews coffee while the other one whines, one assuages
while the other fans flames, one is quirk while the other is quest.

One draws portraits while the other peels paint, one relieves while the other hocks
fear, one saves pennies while the other breaks dishes, one writes home while the
other goes drinking, one plants a garden while the other tracks mud, one
transforms while the other defaces, one jumps rope while the other
smokes weed, one adds numbers while the other subtracts, one
is neat while the other unfolds, one mends pottery while the
other chips marble, one talks freely while the other stays
mute, one insults while the other finds good, one flows
out while the other is dammed.

Life can be a savage curtain, with reason on one side,
emotion on the other.  Humans, we, with the jackal and
the dove forever arming in that never-ending confrontation.

These are the best of times.
