A Nutcracker Ballet Nightmare.

Away from the lovely dancing, out
of earshot of the beautiful music,
far removed from the classic
performance that is the
Nutcracker Ballet, it
arrives as an unwelcome visitor
to disrupt dreams, to shatter the
calm of repose and to instill
nighttime shivering for a
naive and gentle gent.
It is apathetic, wicked foe;
the one called nightmare.

Fangs set aside any niceties
of sugarplums, and a shroud,
heavy and cold, weights the night so,
wherein the battles of toothy mice
and ferocious rat king undermine
the unconscious.
They incise the very fabric
of silk and lavender dream sheet;
they gnaw to pulp the serenity
bestowed by selection.
It is my dark night
of the soul.

The innocent children perform--
still I swell in terror, and
the beauty of such on stage
innocence
dissolves to a shattering
of thin glass with sheer panic.
Somewhere, the dove alights
delicately on the limb.
Tonight, though, the jackal
tears at flesh
and bone.
