A meditation on the station of humanity
With fangs that tear the world
We eat the day,
Vomiting parables
Like Jesus saving us all.
Oh that fanged mouth, that fanged mouth,
God made us equals in blood
With the wolf and hyena
Find a story, a history
To save us
So we can eat God,
Drinking his blood,
And eating his body,
Vomiting a vision
That stills the world.
We are not saved,
We have to eat.
Can God forgive us?
By our lost reckoning
We need a season of grace.
Where can we find it?
Our lost tongue
Tasting only ashes
Your book and your mother
A blanket of fire
On skin so sensitive
Babies suck tenderness,
And we try to stand.
