A little boy asks why there are Dragons on the ball field.
Lessons From the Heart

Kathleen McNamara

A child stood at the statue base,
a question in his eyes.
Why were the dragons on the ball field
and not flying in the skies?

The child tugged at his father’s sleeve.
So much he wanted to know.
What was so special about the dragons
and the egg with the golden glow?

The man glanced at the dragons,
then back down at his son.
How to explain the symbols
to one who was so young?

“It’s the duty of every teacher
to pass on to the small
the knowledge of the ages:
a gift to share with all.”

“The mighty dragon here is Wisdom.
The smaller one is Youth.
The golden egg they hold between them
is the magic of Love and Truth.”

"The message to every teacher,
make sure the lessons you impart
are the ones you want your charges
to really take to heart.”

The boy smiling at his father
said with wisdom all too rare
“The most important lesson
is that we all play fair.”
