No camping in the tent tonight
tonight, we travel
across time, across space, across the universe
a blanket on the ground our launchpad
Side by side we recline
fireflies flit and flash around us
twilight is fading
a black velvet summer night awaits
The waning crescent moon
and far flung glittering night jewels
compete for out attention
Hercules, Lyra, Cygnus
stories of the ancients who named them
how man has always steered by the stars
In the dark I hear the questions
minds too young to comprehend
light and distance and time
I tell them of my own questions
wondering if those stars still exist at the universe edge
or if the light is a history that we see
Our talk turns fanciful
spinning yarns of space travel
what will await us on a new world
who will be waiting for us
All the while, the stars are watching us
while we lay side by side
traveling on the wings of imagination
never leaving our blanket on the ground
