Opal narrates this chapter in which she gets her wings (literally)
Today I got pranked. Not serious-pranked, but annoying-pranked, which is almost worse, since you know nobody's getting in trouble for it. I woke up this morning and stretched out my shoulders, and feathered wings popped out of them. Everyone, especially Annie and Leah, laughed so hard that tears spilled from their eyes. I started to yell at them, but the sweet, innocent faces that I saw wouldn't let me be mean. Then I plucked a feather from my wings and examined it.
It was like a 3-D black outline. I rolled it in between my fingers and it turned a lovely shade of goldish cream. I spread out a palette of colors and say, "This could be fun."
"Now, do you guys wanna play a game?" Cheers of "Sure!" and "Why not?" rang out in the tiny trailer. I stretched a spectrum of colors before me.
"Which colors go well with this?" I twirled the golden feather.
Lily pointed to a shade of navy. "Yes!" I called out.
Leah gestured at strawberry pink. I gave a thumbs-up.
Annie pointed at periwinkle blue. I smiled. "You guys are good!"
Vanessa grabbed at Kelly green. When I nodded, she asked, "What now?"
I said, "Let's paint these wings."
After an hour of giggling, light conversation, and lots of tickly back, my wings were streaked with cream, dark blue, reddish pink, purplish blue, and yellowish green. It was a veritable rainbow. I looked at it and smiled. These girls knew how to paint! After everything dried, Vanessa commented, "I think that we're getting to her! Opal did not complain or roll her eyes once!" Lily laughed the hardest of all, which hurt my feelings for some reason. All in all, though, it was a fun evening
