The Case Study involving the rise of the first Prism Gate and the horror that emerged.
Case Study 365000 The Glutton

Discovered by Dr. Amil Orwen, The Glutton was the first case study to be opened by the Fifth Chapter. Ironically, biology was never Dr. Orwen’s specialty who instead focused on radical ideas and was often compared to the likes of Nikola Tesla for his experiments with time travel. Indeed, time travel was a still controversial topic amongst my colleagues before the discovery of the parallel realms. It was Dr. Amil Orwen who hypothesized that bending light was the key to controlling time. Of course, any fool with a mirror can accomplish such a task without altering the past, present, and future. As was expected, his idea was far more complex. Dr. Orwen wished to compete supercharged Tachyon particles with pulsed beams of light in a mirrored chamber he called the Prism. He believed that measurable particles, which moved at or faster than the speed of light, existed in a state of frozen time. An interesting idea to be sure considering special relativity has always stated that neither wave nor particle can move at such a speed. However, a common hypothesis is that achieving the impossible, a speed faster than light, will allow one to move into the past. How do Tachyon particles fit into such descriptions? Dr. Orwen often held that measured Tachyon particles had either achieved the speed of light or had moved beyond it effectively breaking the theory of special relativity. He believed that particles moving at light speed were frozen in time while those going faster had come from the future. In either case, we could measure them in the present. In addition, he felt that looking through the gap between the tip of a ray of light and a particle moving just faster would allow him to see into the past. In other words, the space between a time frozen particle and a futuristic one would fill with those from the past. After all, time and space are not independent according to special relativity. This hypothesis had filled volumes before my coming, and his work has served as something of an inspiration to my own. As such, I was more than happy to indulge this eccentric old man.

The Prism was created out of our mutual collaboration. The mirrored chamber bent focused light in a circular fashion so that the viewer could measure the gap between particles from the center. In addition, using my resources, we developed a chamber capable of producing supercharged particles like cosmic rays. Unfortunately, the chamber was quite large and as such a bunker, deep in the mountains of Tierra del Fuego, was constructed to house it. It was there that the first tests were conducted. Dr. Orwen was the head of my research team and lead the experiments late October of that year. The results were not what we expected. The remaining surveillance footage of that day reveals the aftermath of the explosion. Half of the bunker was reduced to a molten hole when the particle generator was activated. Despite the destruction and to my surprise, the Prism remained. No longer an inert set of mirrors, the instrument had become a gateway of light to the parallel realm. Those who survived the blast, including Dr. Orwen, were witness to a horror unlike any other.

The Glutton was the first silicon-based life form discovered by humanity, and the creature bore a remarkable resemblance to the gulper eel due to its enormous leathery maw. Its girth was propelled by forelimbs that dug into the concrete floor moments before it produced a vacuum that drew everything toward its mouth. The force was so strong that the weakened foundation of the bunker collapsed crushing the creature and most of the remaining staff to death.

It took time to clear the rubble of the bunker and secure the remains of our researchers. As I had hypothesized, the Prism Gate was stable and had remained open despite the inactivity of the particle chamber. Fortunately, the Glutton had wedged its body into the opening preventing any other intrusion. In addition, its flesh was remarkably resistant to decay which we would later discover was a trait common to silicon lifeforms. Before removing the Glutton for study, we produced the Orsinium block to seal the gate. This hinged chunk of titanium metal was merely a stand-in until something better was eventually developed. Afterward, it took a team of forty-five men and women to dislodge the creature from the opening. Roughly the size of an adult sperm whale, the Glutton possessed a head three times the size of its own body, and Its forelimbs ended in sturdy claws designed for digging. My initial hypothesis was that it used these limbs to anchor its body before drawing in food. Analysis of its tissue revealed its cellular components were made up of carbon-silicon bonds. A monumental discovery as the Glutton was the first living creature to possess an infrastructure containing these combined elements.

Our autopsy of the creature revealed a modified nasal cavity that opened into the throat and can produce powerful vacuums. In addition, an epiglottis like structure would open and close rapidly in the presence of solid material. This was likely to prevent its food from entering the wind chamber. We discovered that the creature lacked any organ like a stomach and thus hypothesized that digestion occurred along the one-and-a-half-mile intestinal network. All along the digestive tract were serrated teeth that we found to be symbiotic organisms. These “bugs” fed off the gastric juices produced by the Glutton and formed sharp calcified shells used to mechanically digest meat. It was shortly after this discovery that we found the remains of Dr. Amil Orwen. He and few others were half dissolved and near unrecognizable within the intestines. The involuntary constriction of the Gluttons smooth muscle had continued even beyond death carrying the bodies deep within. Stunning proof of the effectiveness of this creature’s digestion.

The investigation into the bunker incident was the first for the organization. It wasn’t long after that the Fifth Chapter was founded for the creation of the Prism Gate would prove to have consequences far beyond what we had predicted. Opening a rift to the parallel realms caused a chain reaction which led to the creation of many more. The fabric of space and time around planet Earth had been damaged beyond repair. As a result, rogue rifts began to appear across the globe. Many were ephemeral lasting only a few seconds but some remained open for much longer. Our planet’s doors were ajar and unwelcome guests came for dinner. The Glutton was proof of the dangers creatures from the parallel realms posed and the United Nations immediately called for the foundation of the Fifth Chapter. A militant group of researchers, engineers, and marines dedicated to eliminating any threat to mankind. We operated outside of the laws of nations and we did so in complete confidentiality. I was given a position not out of respect but out of duty born from punishment. Given the role I played in the creation of the first Prism Gate, I was to blame for much of the peril that our planet faced. Though never made official, Dr. Orwen and I are considered the founding members of the Fifth Chapter. A mantel that is far heavier than it sounds. Case Study 365000 should stand as a reminder of the dangers of the parallel realms. Although research into the bunker incident continues, all matters pertaining to the Glutton and the Prism Gate is now closed.
