A brief overview of the Chimera and the discovery of the Bishop
Case Study 365060 The Bishop

Fifteen years after the prism gate was opened"Case Study 365000 The Glutton, we started noticing strange defects in a small population of young children. These Chimera are humans whose living cells possess a carbon-silicon backbone like creatures from the parallel realm. To date, only female Chimera have been discovered, and it is hypothesized that a second X chromosome is required for their existence. Most of these children were discovered between the ages of twelve and fourteen. This suggests that effects on the human genome began within a year of opening the prism gate. However, these girls were discovered late because their physical appearance is almost identical to that of a female child. One defining characteristic that sets them apart is that chimeric cells lack the ability to produce pigments. This means that the children are often pale with gray hair and eyes. So far, we have discovered four different kinds of Chimera called the Rook, the Bishop, the Knight, and the Queen. Case study 365060 will summarize our data on the Bishop.

The first Bishop was discovered in a village located on the outskirts of Moscow Russia. Members of the Fifth Chapter had been dispatched in response to a strange illness sweeping the population. A neurodegenerative disease that left the victims unpredictable and, at times, violent. Those who visited the village noticed unusual behavior in the townsfolk. The people knelt in the dirt with their heads bent down as if in prayer. When our team arrived, we discovered that this behavior was centered around a girl named Viktoriya Petrov. This twelve-year-old child appeared to be the only inhabitant capable of speech. She was found tugging at the heels of another child who was presumably a friend. Her efforts were in vain for the boy didn’t respond and simply knelt with his head in prostration. Our team quickly discovered that their presence was unwelcome.

We later determined that Viktoriya was an abused child as evident by the scars and bruises that covered her body. The mangled corpses of her parents, found hanging from the rafters of their home, was proof that both were likely involved. Either way, it made the girl very suspicious of adults and she regarded our investigation team as a threat. Her fear triggered the other villagers to action. Reports detail how swiftly these people turned from unresponsive to violent. They attacked our members with inhuman strength and no regard for their own safety. These Pawns weren’t slowed by pain or injury and, as such, any unsuspecting threat would’ve been killed immediately. Fortunately, the investigation team was well prepared to deal with these crazed villagers. Once the situation was neutralized, Viktoriya was secured and sedated for transport to our research facilities.

Viktoriya was one of the harder cases to work with because of her mistrust towards Adults. Simple exercises became challenging affairs and our staff had trouble reasoning with the girl. Such things are difficult to do for a normal twelve-year-old let alone an abused one. However, despite these difficulties, we could learn enough to determine how to counteract Viktoriya’s abilities. The first and most obvious discovery was that she was a Chimera. The presence of the carbon silicon backbone in the girl's blood profile confirmed what her gray hair, eyes, and complexion hinted at. However, it was clear from our investigation that she was unlike any other class of Chimera yet discovered. By studying her Pawns, we learned much more.

The human thralls that Bishop class Chimera control would later become known as Pawns. These Pawns lack any complex emotion save for simple instinct. Autopsies of the subjects would reveal intense inflammation of the brain like what is seen in meningitis. The inflamed tissue was the result of a viral infection which we determined through analysis using a modified viral foci assay. Further investigations would reveal that the infectious agent was a yet unidentified family of retrovirus. The most well-known member of viruses of this type being the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By studying the infection in primates, we determined that the virus mainly travels through the peripheral nervous system to the brain. Symptoms can appear anywhere from two to three weeks’ post infection and are usually violent in nature. The virus causes immense swelling of the brain which leads to distress and pain. However, within hours of these symptoms, we noticed rapid mood alteration. Once in control, the virally infected cells stimulate receptors for pleasure and quickly begin to replace the healthy neuronal and glial cells of the brain. The inflamed tissue is a result of the ongoing immune response which leads to neuronal damage. Thus, the higher thought process is quickly lost and the subject is, for all intents and purposes, brain dead. Despite this classification, the infected organisms continue to survive and even demonstrate responsiveness towards pain. The final stage of the infection leaves the victim dormant capable only of kneeling in a comatose state. We believed that the newly developed Pawns required a catalyst to become active. Interestingly, without the presence of a Bishop, these worshipping Pawns never awaken and die of dehydration within three days.

As we hypothesized, the catalyst was produced by Viktoriya. Like most Chimera, the girl possesses modified tear and sweat glands that produce a hormone like protein unique to Bishop class Chimera. This protein is fascinating for it is released in an aerosol form when the Chimera is under stress. The hormone enters the nose and stimulates the olfactory nerves of Pawns which causes the infected nervous system to go berserk. It is very likely that this sort of stimulation causes the subject immense pain which would explain the rapid urgency in their movements. Furthermore, any harmful action displayed against the Bishop leaves the Pawn crippled and unable to move for several minutes. This suggests that the infected can recognize the presence of the Bishop through yet unknown means. As was expected, active Pawns exhibit elevated brain activity at the sites of infected cells. These infected cells push the body into a fight or flight like response giving heightened strength and speed to the subject. This makes the infected very dangerous as they act like cornered animals. Furthermore, Pawns can transmit the virus through their saliva and as such bites can leave the victim vulnerable to infection. However, it should be noted that this isn’t the primary means by which the virus is transmitted. Production and transmission of the infectious agent are carried out by the Bishop herself.

The human genome project was conducted as a means of determining every functional gene within our DNA. Thus, we discovered roughly 20,000 genes that encode protein used by the body as a means of survival. As impressive as this number is, these active genes only make up little over 1% of our total genome. This means that roughly 99% of our genome encodes unusable nonsense protein. This noncoding DNA is often silenced and unrecognizable by cellular components responsible for making protein. However, some rare genetic deficiencies are caused by an inability to tell the difference between coding and noncoding DNA. The Bishop class Chimera can recognize a segment of noncoding DNA called endogenous retroviral elements.

As long as humanity has been on earth we have suffered from viral infections. These insidious bits of protein can incorporate viral DNA into our own genome. This DNA inserts itself into a cell's nucleus and reprograms it to produce the viral protein that is pieced together into a functional capsule containing the virus genome. Depending on the type of infection, once enough viral particles are gathered the cell is broken apart and the components are freed to start the cycle over again. Our survival depends on the recognition and destruction of both the virus and virally infected cells. This battle has been waged by our ancestors long before our coming and continues even to this day. Thus, bits of viral DNA has become a permanent part of our genome called endogenous retroviral elements. Some of these noncoding segments of DNA make up bits and pieces of viral protein that are otherwise non-functional and thus are unlikely to do harm to us. However, the Bishop class Chimera is unique because their cells machinery can recognize these elements and produce a functional virus from the protein. These viral capsules are packaged with chimeric DNA that functions to reprogram surrounding victims into Pawns. This retrovirus becomes airborne after being expelled through coughing and sneezing. Indeed, behavioral studies revealed that Viktoriya had a habit of frequently sneezing especially after a meal. In addition, our research showed a staggering number of viral particles in the girl’s sputum making her extremely dangerous to large populations of exposed people. Fortunately, like most Chimera, her abilities didn’t manifest until puberty and so collateral damage was minimal. The appearance of so many Pawns around the girl’s home was likely the result of her parent's abuse and her stress. We learned how to counteract the action of the virus by studying the girl’s immune system. You see, the Bishop class Chimera has immune cells that recognize and destroy any rogue viral particles through a potent antibody response. This makes Viktoriya immune to the effects of her own virus. By studying her blood, we could develop a vaccine preventing the development of new Pawns. Since the virus takes time to reach the brain, victims can be effectively treated within three weeks of exposure. However, once symptoms emerge therapy will only lead to the subject's death.

Studies surrounding Viktoriya Petrov led to the discovery of a new class of Chimera called the Bishop. Like all Chimera before her, Viktoriya was transported to a secure environment for continued study. We are fortunate that Bishop class Chimera are rare even among their own kind for the damage they can cause far exceeds all other classes. Thus, these Chimera are considered class 1 targets and are to be eliminated if the threat to human life is severe. As an added note, any chapter members seeking approval for the study of Bishop class Chimera are to be vaccinated against the Pawn virus with no exceptions. For further details of the Rook, the Knight, and the Queen see case studies 365058"Case Study 365058 The Rook, 365059"Case Study 365059 The Knight, and 365061"Case Study 365061 The Queen. All matter pertaining to Viktoriya Petrov, Bishop class Chimera, and the Pawns is now closed.
