A dialogue-only story about how to explain the concept of jail to a child.
|"Daddy, what's jail?"
"It's where we keep bad people so that they're not on the streets with us."
"So who's in jail?"
"Well, there's this guy, Roy."
"Is he a bad person?"
"Yes, he is."
"Because he used something called marijuana."
"Oh. So he's a bad person?"
"Yes. Well, he is because he used it here."
"What do you mean?"
"In some states, it's okay to use it. So if he used it in Colorado, then he wouldn't be in jail."
"So if he used it in Colorado then he wouldn't be a bad person?"
"Who else is in jail?"
"Then we have Jerome. He was driving fast and he got caught."
"So they put him in jail?"
"Well, no. They told him to pay some money, but he used all his money buying medicine for his children. When he couldn't pay the money, they put him in jail."
"But why did they put him in jail?"
"Because he didn't have money."
"But don't you drive fast? How come you're not in jail?"
"Because I never got caught."
"Oh. So who else is in jail?"
"There's Richard. He hurt his wife and his child really bad."
"I'm glad he's in jail. He sounds scary."
"Actually, he's not in jail anymore."
"What?! Why not?"
"He had enough money to pay bail."
"That's when you give them money and they let you leave."
"But...he's going back to jail, right?"
"Probably not. I'm sure he left the country by now."
"But I thought bad people went to jail."
"They do, but he had a lot of money."
"Anyone else in jail?"
"There's this lady named Bethany."
"Is she a bad person? What did she do?"
"Well, they say that she punched some people, but I don't really think she did it."
"So why is she in jail?"
"Because they said she did it, and because she can't afford bail."
"But is she a bad person?"
"I don't think so."
"So why is she there?"
"Because she doesn't have money."
"How many people who are in jail are bad people?"
"I don't know. Some?"
