Be careful what you wish for (3-14-18 Daily Flash Fiction WINNER)
"Well, hello, precious, what can I do for you?"
"Are you Madeline Prince? This box came to me by mistake."
"Yes, come in! Can I get you a drink?" she offered.
"No thanks," I replied.
"You're unhappy, I can tell. There's something you're longing for, maybe a promotion, perhaps?"
A chill came over me, "How did you know?"
"I just know things, dear." She reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a necklace made of a leather strip with a charm on it. "Wear this. You'll get the results you're looking for," she smiled, knowingly.
"Yeah, right." I put the charm in my pocket and left. What a kooky old bat!
When I got to work the next day, everyone was standing around talking, some were crying. I went over to Marilyn, the receptionist, who's a mean gossip.
"Didn't you hear? Erika Myers was killed in an auto accident this morning."
Erika and I were competing for the same promotion. She landed it; now she was dead. I fingered the charm around my neck and remembered what Madeline said. No, surely not, I thought.
