Charlie's Room

FADE IN:

INT. – CHARLIE'S BEDROOM – EVENING

A wooden twin bed sits in the middle of the bedroom. The bed is unmade with a blue theme to the blankets, pillow, and sheets. On each side of the bed is a nightstand, the one on the right as you enter the room covered with comic books, although we can't see exactly which ones they are. A wooden desk is also in the room, messily covered in random papers, homework, and some random things. The floor is somewhat clean, compared to the other surfaces in the room, only covered by dirty laundry shoved into the corners. Clean clothes stick out of a thick dresser's drawers. A calendar hangs on the wall with notes scribbled on many of the days, such as “Baseball practice” on a couple of them and “Dave's Birthday” on the fifth, and over half of the month's days are crossed off. Next to the calender, a clock ticks, only a couple minutes off. CHARLIE EMERSON (10 years) messy brown hair, brown eyes, red T-shirt, blue jeans, walks in through the open door.

                                                 CHARLIE
Ben, what are you doing in my room?

BEN EMERSON (8 years) dark blond/light brown hair, blue eyes, pajama pants with spaceships on them, no shirt, crawls legs-first out from under Charlie's bed.

                                                 BEN
I was looking for my toy.

                                                 CHARLIE
                                       (laughs)
I almost forgot you still sleep
                             with that stuffed bear.

                                                 BEN
It's not funny. Sir Claws protects
                             me at night.

The door SLAMS closed without either of the boys touching it. A low RUMBLE is heard, and the room begins to shake. Ben falls to the floor. Charlie starts to laugh, but is interrupted by his own fall. Charlie begins to stand up, but gets thrown against his bed. After a minute of huddling against the floor, the boys begin to rise into the air. All of the stuff around them also floats about half-way from the floor to the ceiling.

                                                 CHARLIE
                             What happened?

                                                 BEN
I don't know, but I wish Sir Claws
                             was here.

Charlie tries to walk, but fails to move. Instead, he just rotates, his head almost brushing against the floor. Charlie then starts moving his arms and legs like he was swimming. He glides over to the window.

                                                 CHARLIE
                             Wow!

                                                 BEN
                             What is it?

Ben copies Charlie and also floats over to the window.

                                                 CHARLIE
                             It's impossible

                                                 BEN
                             It's amazing!

We finally see out the window. We see the Earth, about as big as a beach ball, start to get smaller. Stars surround the blue and green globe and seem to go out to infinity. The boys turn their heads and look in the other direction, which we also get to see, the moon and several planets, although many of them are barely visible.

                                                 BEN
How did we get here? Am I just
                             dreaming?

                                                 CHARLIE
If so, then I'm dreaming, too.

Suddenly, the boys fall to the floor, as if gravity was just turned on.

                                                 BEN
                             Oof! Well, I'm not dreaming.

                                                 CHARLIE
But this can't be real. It's
                             impossible.

A TV-like light appears on the blank wall. There is only minimal static, and we can see clearly a bald, green alien with three eyes and two antennae on the top of its head.

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
                             Greetings, Earthlings.

                                                 BEN
                             Uh, hi?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
As we have come to the conclusion
                             that Earthlings are quite skeptical,
I will assure you that this is real.
You are not dreaming, and this is
not a simulation. We will discuss
                             your mission when you arrive.

The wall goes back to normal. Charlie looks at Ben with his eyes wide.

                                                 CHARLIE
                             What. On Earth. Was that?

                                                 BEN
I don't think it was on Earth.

                                                 CHARLIE
Well, whatever it was, we need to
get back home. I mean, if the whole
                             room just disappeared, that would
                             call for some extreme measures,
                             wouldn't it?

A THUD is heard, followed by a couple more.

                                                 BEN
                                       (stuttering)
                             W-what what that?

                                                 CHARLIE
                             I don't know. Let's see.

Charlie looks around out the window. Seeing nothing but outer space, he walks to the other window across the room. There we see several scaly, blue creatures about one or two feet tall climbing the side of the room. They attach the end of a tube the size of the window to the window and float away. Then, from the other window, we see a flying saucer with a tube coming out of the bottom of it. Several of the weird creatures run through the tube and go through the window into the floating room. Soon there are half a dozen of them in Charlie's bedroom.

                                                 ONE OF THE CREATURES
                                       (in a surprisingly deep voice)
I am Kzval. We are here to take
                             over your vessel.

                                                 BEN
Take over our vessel? Are you space
                             pirates or something?

                                                 CHARLIE
                                       (nudges Ben)
                             Let me do the talking.
                                       (to Kzval)
We don't know what you mean. This
isn't a spaceship. This is just my
bedroom. And we have to get home.

                                                 KZVAL
                                       (in a surprisingly deep voice)
                             In that case
                                       (pause)
                             Attack!

Kzval and the rest of the creatures drop to their four hands and two legs and jump at the boys, yelling in a different language. Charlie steps in front of Ben to protect him. The creatures hop onto Charlie and bury him in an alien pile, hanging onto him with their pointy fingers. Ben jumps back in surprise.

                                                 CHARLIE
                             Get
                                       (pause)
                             my
                                       (pause)

                                                 BEN
                                       (yelling over the noise)
                             What?

                                                 CHARLIE
                             Knife!

Ben hesitates a moment. Charlie tries to fight off the creatures, but isn't strong enough.

                                                 BEN
                                       (thoughtfully; to himself)
Where does he keep his knife?

Ben suddenly pulls out Charlie's top desk drawer. It is nearly empty, except for some random papers, a half-used notebook, and a folded knife. Ben grabs the knife and hurriedly unfolds it. The creatures look up and stare at the knife.

                                                 KZVAL
                                       (in a surprisingly deep voice)
                             Get it!

Ben gasps and backs up against the wall as the creatures swarm around him. He quivers, holding the knife in both hands in front of himself. Charlie pushes through the attacking aliens and grabs the knife from Ben.

                                                 CHARLIE
(aiming the knife at the creatures)
                             Get off our ship!

The creatures suddenly all run away, each trying to be the first out. They scramble through the tube and take off, some of them falling out of the tube as it is ripped from the window.

                                                 BEN
                             Wow, thanks.

                                                 CHARLIE
You may be annoying, but you're
                             still my brother.

Ben hugs Charlie.

                                                 BEN
Do you have any idea how to steer a
                             room?

Charlie stares at Ben, then the two of them burst into laughter.

                                                 BEN
Okay, but really, how do we get
                             back home?

                                                 CHARLIE
I have no idea. Maybe we should
wait until we get to the weird
green alien we saw on my wall.

The clock ticks by, the room completely silent. Ben and Charlie sit on the bed, waiting for something to happen. After only a few seconds, the room stops moving. Being used to it moving, the boys fall forward and off the bed.

                                                 BEN
Man, I'm really starting to enjoy
                             seat belts!

                                                 CHARLIE
                             I know what you mean.

The boys stand up to see what happened. Out the window, we see the room has landed on an asteroid. The ground is black, and a house-like building with matching paint as the outside of Charlie's bedroom is right next to the room. Ben walks over to the door and puts his hand on the doorknob.

                                                 CHARLIE
                                       (shouting)
No, Ben, don't open the door!

Ben turns the knob anyway, and swings the door open. We see a hallway past the door, as if it had connected. Ben walks down the hallway.

INT. – THE HOUSE ON THE ASTEROID – SPACE

The entire room Ben walks into matches Charlie's, although it is a whole lot larger. The room is empty except for the bald, green alien they saw from Charlie's room. The alien has three fingers on each hand and is about seven feet tall, with proportionately long arms and legs. Charlie runs after Ben, stopping to look around.

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
This is not the best place to speak.
We will go to your ship.

                                                 BEN
                             Who are you?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
Our research shows that my name
                             would be nearly impossible for
                             Earthlings to pronounce. However,
you may call me “Damian”, as that
would be the closest that you could
                             say.

Ben and Charlie walk awkwardly behind the tall alien to the bedroom.

INT. – CHARLIE'S BEDROOM – EVENING

The alien ducks in the room and pulls out the chair at Charlie's desk and sits down. Ben and Charlie sit next to each other on Charlie's bed.

                                                 CHARLIE
What are we doing out here? I mean,
                             in outer space?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
The two of you were selected as the
                             best Earthlings for our
                             requirements.

                                                 BEN
So we're going on a cool mission?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent; smiles)
Something like that. You need to
return the Ytalvi to her people.

                                                 CHARLIE
                             That what?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
                             The Likopi people's princess. She
                             is essential to their survival.

                                                 CHARLIE
Can't they just get her themselves?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
                             No. Without her, they cannot
                             physically function. She is an
                             encouragement to her people, and
they must see her every day to be
                             able to do anything.

                                                 BEN
                             How does that work?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
It is a combination of her ten
                             eyes' sparkle, her three-rowed
smile, and most of all, her
personality. It is rare to find a
Likopi who is just right for this position.

                                                 CHARLIE
She sounds ugly. Weird and ugly.

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
                             The Likopi have different views
than you do. However, I will ask
her to change her form to one you
                             will more readily rescue.

                                                 BEN
                             I thought she was gone.

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
She is, but telepathy is the main
form of communication where I come
                             from.
                                       (pause; closes eyes)
                                       (British accent)
She tells me she will be in
                             Earthling form when you arrive.

                                                 CHARLIE
When we arrive? We didn't agree to
anything. We need to be home,
before Mom finds our room missing.
                             She'll worry!

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
You will be back long before your
                             mother awakes.

                                                 CHARLIE
How can you be sure? I thought it
                             would take hundreds of years.

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
                             And yet you arrived here.

                                                 CHARLIE
Yeah, but if we go on and do this
                             rescue mission thing. I mean,
                                       (pause)
Maybe I'm just not ready for space
travel yet. You know, I'm just a
kid. I'm not even in Middle School.

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
Yes, but you have imagination. That
is one of the key things required.
I already think the two of you
proved your bravery on the way over.

                                                 BEN
                                       (raises hand)
                             I was terrified.

                                                 CHARLIE
Just think about it, Ben. Haven't
you always wanted to go on an
                             adventure, just like Spaceman Jack?

                                                 BEN
                                       (smiles)
Well, it would be cool, I guess.

                                                 CHARLIE
                             What are you thinking?

                                                 BEN
I will need to borrow one of your
                             shirts . . .
                                       (pause)

                                                 CHARLIE
Well, it looks like we're in. So,
                             where to?

                                                 THE ALIEN
                                       (British accent)
                             Aragmot, the lava planet.
