Science fiction and fantasy group newsletter

Your editor:
Well, simply put, that's me. My name is David. I've been writing on and off since I was in my early teens, yes that was before computers. I used to write everything in spiral bound notebooks, of course I never told anybody about my writing so my notebook inadvertantly got thrown away, muchh to my dismay.
My favorite writing subject is Vampires, but no I'm not a goth and if you ever met me in person I would be about the most normal person you could ever meet... a big geek, and nerd, but normal nonetheless. In fact thanks to my size I can be a bit scary wothout trying to be either.
Iam also a leader, or rsther the leader in the group. I recently took it over from Matt bird, the groups true founder. So needless to say, I have no clue, but I know what want to do with the group. I want to make everyone in the group better writers, in their respective genres.
So without much ado.... welcome to your new group.

Monthly article:
What is science fiction?
Well the textbook definition of it is simpily fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets. But does the textbook definition really give us a complete definition of it? I dont believe it is complete enough. Nor does it really give the importance of it in our society today.
Remember science fiction makes science fact, whether you want to believe it or not, I believe it is true. After all would we have gone to the moon without it? Would we have had the Space shuttle without it? Be planning a mission to mars? Or other things like that without it?
What about other aspects of science, or even medicine advances? Would they have been there without it? It really is astonishing what someone would read a story and simply say why not, then proceeded t reverse engineer it into being.
I chose this genre to do the main bit of my writing because of its wide open ideas for writing in. I mean really think about it. Science fiction can be in any time frame, location, dimension, era, there really isn't any limits to it, except the limits of your own mind.
However it is also not without its rules, that for the most part cant be broken. Forexample, one can't write about the canals on Mars today, since they have been proven to not be any in exsistance. However that doesn't meean a society can't have trenches on mars built for the purpposes of trench warfare with an enemy.
Plus the idea of science fiction does become a bit challenging if you get in too deep explaining how something works. Thatone can make it hard, if not impossible to write in science fiction.
So did I answer that question? Good.... I am glad I could.... I hope you enjoyed this newsletter. Thanks for reading this.
