The first in a series of blog entries.
It all started eight years ago when my cousin's daughter was having her third birthday. I had never met the little girl, but my mother told me that she loved to read, just like I do. I decided to give her a book for her birthday that I had written. I started on a book called "The Tales of Callah". It was a book of children's fairy tales set in the magical land of Callah. It took a week but I was thrilled to be working on such a big project. I ended up with ten stories that I was so happy with. I started looking around for a publisher. It was completely possible for me to just email my cousin the Word document, but I thought it would be more special to send her the physical book that both of them could enjoy at bedtime. But, there were no publishers in sight that wanted the book. I live in a province of Canada with a small literary community, but it was not surprising.
The book never did get to my cousin's daughter, but it did revive my writing. I hadn't written in ages. From "The Tales of Callah" came ideas for another book. "Space Runner" was supposed to be about a woman who, in the future, runs a courier business. I wrote one story for that book.
I had always wanted to be an author, but my life had taken twists and turns of the unpleasant type, and my dreams had fallen to the wayside. Personally, my life had taken a better turn at this point, and my dream lived in a more pronounced place in my mind.
My career journey had started.
