Words can be collected,
arranged,
strung together and admired.
I try them on,
wear them out,
show off my handiwork.
They are compliant.

Not like you
who, though I bore you within,
never belonged to me—
who, though I washed you without,
never sat still to be dried and polished,
body and soul wriggling
from my embrace.

How willful you are,
how like a little god,
how I love you in all your
shining imperfections.
