Signs of Spring on a mid-winter walk.
Dare We Hope?

Kathleen McNamara

I have seen the signs,
Mother Nature sending hints.
Or maybe she's just teasing?
It is January after all.

A stiff on-shore breeze
accompanied our walk.
Max, my companion, nose to the ground
following an invisible scent trail.

His snuffling did not disturb it.
A robin! I am intrigued.
Did this one over-winter on our back bay?
Or is it an early harbinger?

As we progressed, I spied them.
Two fragile flashes of purple,
crocuses daring to show their faces
to a mid-winter sun.

I stop to marvel at the brazenness!
The flora and fauna of early Spring
flaunting beak and petals
in the face of Old Man Winter.
