Free verse based on photo prompt of ruins in a jungle - For Word Picture Contest.
It lures you in,
this remnant of another age
struggling against the foliage,
still clinging to a sliver
of it's former imposing splendour

The door gapes, like an eye to the past

How many walked its halls,
you wonder
and how many more
will yet run fingertips
over rough, weathered stone
contemplating the endless march of time.
That yawning void
in which we are so very
inconsequential.

It is a spark from a flint,
this remnant of another age
in that grand scheme
of all the things that are,
and were
and will ever be.

Yet it will lurk,
resilient
when we are but dust returned to the stars.

For a handful of moments
that stretch taught
over lifetimes
For the spark of a flint
on a cold winter's evening
it defies, and endures
and then, as all must eventually
in the battle with time
it yields.
