A short poem about mental illness
1 Have you ever been caught in quicksand?

Loved ones hold their branches
Just out of your reach,
Cooing --

“We made your favorite dinner tonight, honey.”

“Just breathe, sweetie, you’ll be okay.”

“It’ll get better soon, darling.”

“Maybe you just need some rest, honey.”

Then the mirage melts away like
hairdryer to crayons

Except the result.
is a lot less colorful.

White walls
Closing in on all sides
And you start chirping
Like a caged bird.

2 These little boys and girls
Don’t exactly scream the way
you would expect.

These little boys and girls
Have been through more trauma
Than you have.

When they scream and cry
It’s because they’re having
Night terrors
The nurses are the bad news bearers
When they hear
They’re going back to their family.

The word should be soothing
But for these little boys and girls
Family is the exact
End to their world.

3 Insane is not a fair description
Because this behavior is caused
By the wrong prescription

Combined with unfair environmental factors
And genetic cocktails of misfortune.

4 This man hears God’s voice
And sees His angels too.
Society
Does not see him
The way he wishes he
Could be viewed --
Normal.

5 This girl
Has slits up her wrist
Down her thighs

And if she could,
On her eyes

So she wouldn’t have to see
Her weight on the scale.

6 A young boy
Is no longer able
To get out of bed.

He’s stood on the edge
Of the Golden Gate Bridge

Running from the monsters
In his head.

7 Have you ever been caught in quicksand?
Loved ones hold their branches
Just out of your reach,
Cooing --

“We made your favorite dinner tonight, honey.”

“Just breathe, sweetie, you’ll be okay.”

“It’ll get better soon, darling.”

“Maybe you just need some rest, honey.”

Then the mirage melts away like
hairdryer to crayons.

And you’re left alone,
Sand easier on the lungs
Than the smoke from endless
Packs of cigarettes.

Darling,
You’re not the only one
Drowning in this world.
