Inspired by Matthew 26:7-13
Centuries hence,
my name will be debated.
Chew on that irony if you will,
not the gristle of imperfect vessels
who scolded my waste,

or remember this instead:
that John felt the same
when he baptized the Lord—
unworthy of the work,
too burning with purpose to turn away,

that when I broke open
and tipped scented oil
over his head,
I only anointed in preface
to his own sealing of salvation,

his blood an ointment
worth all eternity.

Inspired by the Come, Follow Me readings for June 10-16
