A glimpse into my after-hours mind.
It's four a.m. and you aren't here with me
I lost my energy and my mind at a
quarter after three, a quarter in my pocket
and a hole in my jeans how many different
ways can you change a quarter?

Two dimes
and a nickel for me please;
no wait, five pennies
instead if one is good luck
maybe five
will bring you home a bit
earlier than planned

Fifteen miles and a dozen headlights,
two cars pass, one light a piece
that's more good luck
make a wish, a passing thought of your kiss

I spent a dime on a single cigarette,
some brand I've never heard of
two glances from strangers
as I slide the rolled tobacco
over the top of my ear
and request a single pack of matches
to date my lonesome "fag";
that's what the Europeans call them, right?

I can't remember as I thank the
cashier on my path to the door
and my feet hit
the dirty pavement once more
inside of my shoes, of course

My longing for you grows stronger
as I strike a match for fun and
watch it burn down to my dirty fingertips
I planted a tree
a small one
just for you while
you've been away from me,
soil under my fingernails
reminds me of memories in the shower

It's been awhile
A baker's dozen of days since we last were intimate
I'm craving the feeling of your body on mine
worse than I was the cigarette
you roll off the tongue
a tad bit sweeter and
leave a more pleasant
taste on my lips than
the tar and pencil shavings
that I have come to believe went
into this bad habit of mine

My last dime
and I need a new shoelace
for my left foot
Where can I get a shoelace at half past five?
Fifteen miles, no headlights this time
Maybe I can start a new trend
no laces in my shoes
that leaves me ten cents on top
and another cigarette tomorrow
I love you so
