Treaties, Agreements, Promises...many made...none kept by the government. Not one.
Their own laws broken
They cut the land with invisible knives
On paper lies called maps
Giving to those who were here first
The barren useless scraps

He conquers, controls, converts
This European man
Spreads words of brotherhood
He himself doesn’t understand

I despise him and pity those
Who took this land in “trust”
But will not pay the debts he owes
Return the land to us

He placates; holds debates
But as we know our “friend”
With committees and chiefs in tow
Will betray us in the end

“They do not have the money.”
“They cannot return the land.”
They ask us to forgive and forget
The folly of their plans

(Read how the government took this land in trust to use as collateral to build Canada and then what the laws of trust entails. You will see that at 150 years the land and money for it’s use was supposed to be given back to the native peoples but of course, now, they explain that never will happen. Apologies, but you can't expect promises from all those decades ago to be honoured. We're all Canadians now, let's just forgive and forget and make another deal. Ever owe taxes to the government? Ever hear them say that if it isn't paid by a due date that daily interest will apply immediately the day following? Ever ask them to just forgive and forget?) G. Gabriel
