A 32 line poem written for the Writer's Cramp prompt, 9/14/19
The Strangest Thing

I'm often sought out on my trips,
as I make my way along
walls, fences and roof-tops
where I like to sing my song.
Some view me as unlucky
and those will cross the street
to avoid me passing by them
or getting round their feet.

Others look more favorably
on my coat of black,
and from them I am assured
attention I'll not lack.
To these I am a lucky sign
a portent of things to come,
like riches and good fortune,
a love that will be won.

The strangest thing has happened,
for there is a mix this time,
of conflicting superstitions
that send shivers down the spine.
A Friday numbered thirteen
is seen as something 'bad';
and on this day when friendly
it seems I make friends mad.

Better to stay safe indoors,
to snuggle in my bed;
at least I will not hear them,
those superstitions when they're said.
Come morning, with the rising sun
my welcome will be back;
I'll not feel so ostracised
and, of fuss there'll be no lack.

People have contradictory superstitions about both black cats, and the number 13. For some reason, if the 13th falls on a Friday, this is believed to be especially ominous by the superstitious.
