Flash Fiction
Coke and Pepsi

“OK, I need to take statements from everyone,” the officer said, “I need to know where you were, what you were doing, and what you saw. You first,” he pointed to Ray, “Name?”

“Ray Calloway.”

“Where were you when it happened?”

“Over by that vending machine,” he pointed.

“Anyone with you?”

“Yeah, my friend Bobby here...” he stuck his thumb out toward Bobby, who frowned.

“And what were you doing?”

“Buying a drink?”

“Is that a question?”

“No, I was buying a Pepsi!”

“That’s a Coke machine.”

“A... Coke!”

Officer Trent looked at him, his upper lip was sweating. “OK, buying a Coke with Bobby. What’d you see?”

“Two guys!” Bobby leaned in, bumping him casually, “No, three!” Ray blurted. “Three guys. Two went in and one stayed outside. He wasn’t even smoking! Just standing there while his buddies went in.”

“And... what happened next?”

“Well, the other two came out, with the paper bag. Then they ran off!”

“Which way did they go?”

“Um, not sure, you know buying Pepsi...”

“Coke,” Bobby whispered.

“Coke! Buying a coke!” Ray was turning red now. “So exciting! A real robbery!”

“What did you do next?”

“Next?”

“After you saw the guys run away.”

“I, ah, we... went over to buy some Pepsi.”

“You were already there, weren’t you?”

Ray was sweating profusely now, “Right...” he said quietly, looking at the ground, “We... were already there...”

“Where’s the bag of money?” Officer Trent asked, softly.

“Behind the soda machine...”

“Let’s go. You too,” he said looking at Bobby.

In the back of the squad car, Bobby turned to Ray. “I thought you said you’d done this before. You swore you weren’t lying!”

“Well, Mr. Remembers Everything, did I say I got away with it?” Ray spat back sarcastically.

The friendship did not last.
