Walking her regular route through the park early one morning Janice stopped at a bench to re-tie her shoe. As she was bent over trying to get it tied right, she heard a voice say, “Who is in charge here?”
Startled, because she thought she was alone, she jumped up, looking around, but couldn’t see the person. Before she could relax however, the voice asked again, “Who is in charge here?” It seemed to be coming from a bush.
Her first thought, since the bush was small enough and out in the open enough not to be capable of hiding an actual person, was that it was somebody’s idea of a joke. A hidden speaker likely. ‘Well! I’ll show them!’ she thought, and walked over to pull the offending speaker out by it’s wires. ‘It would serve the sneaky person right if I just carried it to a trash can and tossed it away!’ she decided.
But as she came around the bush, there was a large crow standing on the ground. “Who is in charge here?” it asked again. Janice was dumbfounded.
Finally she regrouped and said, “Nobody, it’s a public park.”
“It figures!” the crow said, cocking it’s head at her, and it flew off.
Janice stood another moment in complete confusion, and then walked slowly away mumbling to herself, “It was a bird... a talking bird...”
Back in their dorm room Harry and Chip were howling in laughter. “We couldn’t have asked for a better video than that for the project! That bird landing there was a hoot!”
Up in a nearby tree, in the park, the crow was sitting with a friend, “That woman told me it was a public park, really, I’m not kidding, she told me. And, she thinks my name is Nobody...”
