Pilot Screenplay for a Animated Show starring a sibling trio who are Warriors for Hire
GUARDIANS
“The Haunted House”
FADE IN:
Ext. Field (David, rose and Greg's home) — Morning
ROSE, 16, is laying down on her back in a small field. A beach borders it to the south and west, a sprawling dark forest with a black magical aura on the east and the run-down streets of a small town to the north.

A van is parked on one side of the field and Rose’s younger brother, GREG, 8, is sleeping on the other side of the field in a bed of flowers.

She is reading an old book on magic while holding a bright blue Rose, dripping out blue liquid, in her mouth.

She reaches out her hand in a vein attempt to cast a spell, but nothing happens.

A very skinny middle-age woman, MRS. WILLIAMS, wearing old clothing approaches her from behind.

MRS. WILLIAMS
Oh, excuse me ma'am.

Rose looks up at her with the flower still in her mouth with a questioning glance.

ROSE
What’s up?

MRS. WILLIAMS
Well, I’m really sorry to bother you, but some recent events have been coming up that’s making it harder for me and my family to afford your services.

Rose looks at her confused.

ROSE
Events? Like What?

MRS. WILLIAMS
Well, life’s been a lot harder for our family ever since my husband was abducted by demons.

ROSE
Like I said, we’re working hard to find him.

MRS. WILLIAMS
And because I’ve had trouble looking for a job on my own, I can’t really afford this month’s fees.

ROSE
Well, I can’t offer you our services for free. We are heroes for hire after all.

Mrs. Williams looks down to the ground.

MRS. WILLIAMS
That’s what I was afraid of.

Rose stands up.

ROSE
So you just wanna cancel on us, despite everything we’ve done to keep your family safe, and on such sort notice?

Rose walks around and puts her hand on her forehead in anger.

The woman starts to look distressed.

MRS. WILLIAMS
I’m sorry, I don’t know what else to do.

Rose SIGHS.

ROSE
Fine, whatever. Tell you what, because of your hardships, we’ll only half your cancellation fee. Sound good?

MRS. WILLIAMS
Oh, thank you so much.

The woman walks away.

Cut to:
INT. David’s van
The van contains shelves of books and potions. A broken mattress lies on the floor along with scattered pieces of paper.

DAVID is sitting at the drivers seat reading a book of spells, while poorly PRONOUNCING incantations in a Latin-like language. In front of him is a black, rusty kitchen pot containing a potion he’s mixing with a wooden spoon heated by a portable stove-top.

Rose slams the door open and half-haphazardly grabs potions from the shelf and puts them in her book-bag, while breaking some of them.

David turns to face Rose, annoyed.

DAVID
Who made you mad this time, Rose?

ROSE
Look David, this one isn’t my fault. That cheap anorexic bitch just canceled her insurance.

DAVID
(pointing to the potions)
And what are those for?

ROSE
Don’t worry, these are just going to remind her why she needs us.

Rose grabs a jar containing yellow liquid with a small bolt of lighting in the center and stares at it.

ROSE (CONT.)
Ooh, this looks cool.

David lowers the jar.

DAVID
You know, the people of this town look up to us. If instead of helping them we exploit them for money, we’ll betray their trust.

Rose takes his arm and moves it away.
ROSE
Well us making money is gonna help the economy get richer. Haven’t you heard of trickle-down economics.

Rose continues to grab more stuff from the shelves. David grabs her arm.
DAVID
Rose, stop!

Rose pushes David down to the ground.

ROSE
C’mon David, get real. We can’t rely on good-feels from random townies forever. We’re gonna somehow need to get money so Greg, our 8-year old brother that we took from his home on the other side of the country, can get stuff like food and clothing.

David stares at her angrily and sighs.

DAVID
Fine, whatever.

David stays on the ground looking depressed as Rose walks out of the van whistling happily.

EXT. FEILD
Rose walks past Greg and wakes him up by nudging him with her foot.

ROSE
Come on Greg, let’s go on an adventure.

Greg grabs his magic dagger and then runs after Rose. The two walk to the

EXT. DOWNTOWN STREET
Rose and Greg are walking down the nearly empty small town street along the beach. The sidewalks are covered in trash and most of the storefronts are empty and deteriorating.

A teenage werewolf boy in raggedy clothing is asking for money on the sidewalk, but gets scorned by the people who walk past him.

There are some people in old clothes on the side of the street holding up signs protesting the influx of monsters.

A magical skeleton is sleeping on the sidewalk, using newspaper as blankets. Greg accidentally steps on the newspaper.

SKELETON
Do you mind?

Greg nervously looks at the skeleton apologetically and keeps walking.

ROSE
Man this place is a dump.

Rose pulls Greg to the side and kneels down to his level. She pulls out a potion and hands it to Greg.

ROSE (CONT.)
Now, today you’re gonna learn an important lesson in maintaining customer loyalty.

One of the protesters throws a rotten egg at Rose’s face.

PROTESTOR
(screaming)
Hey you witches, why aren’t you doing anything about the monsters here? Aren’t you supposed to protect us?

ROSE
(sarcastic, to Greg)
Oh! I forgot. People hate us.
C’mon Greg, let’s get out of here.

UPTOWN
Rose and Greg then walk uphill towards the residential neighborhoods. The streets are cleaner, but the houses are old and run down with many of them having a faded-out “FOR SALE” sign.

They walk up to Mrs. Williams house, which is broken, run down and has a lot of its windows cracked.

ROSE
Now I want you do me a big favor. Just throw this little potion, at that big house over there.

Greg throws the potion at the house causing a small explosion and spirits to fly out.

Rose reaches in to her bag to grab another potion, but gets distracted by a swirling vortex coming from an old mansion down the street and starts to stare at it.

Greg stares at Mrs. Williams’ house for a second, then looks over at Rose.

GREG
Oh, uh, did I do it right?

Rose’s eyes start to glow in excitement. She starts to walk towards the vortex.

ROSE
(excited)
I wanna go there.

Greg looks at the mansion worried.
Cut to:
INT. DAVID'S VAN
David is recklessly driving the van to the possessed house with Greg buckled in the passenger’s seat and Rose is standing in between them excitedly.

DAVID
So you said there was a giant black vortex coming from the house.

ROSE
(excitedly nodding head)
Uh huh! Uh huh!
(pointing to the house)
Like that.

The van slows down as it approaches the house. David starts to sweat nervously.

DAVID
(stuttering)
Yep, that house is definitely haunted. We should check to see if anyone’s trapped inside.

Rose climbs out from the sunroof and runs towards the house in the middle of David’s sentence.

David immediately slams his foot on the break.

DAVID
(screaming)
Where are you going? Get back here.

ROSE
(excited)
To the house, duh.

CAMERA focuses on David.

DAVID
(to GREG)
I mean who does she think she is, running into such a dangerous place with no—

CAMERA pans to Greg with his hand on the car door, about to open it. David sighs.

Cut to:
EXT. OUTSIDE OF VAN — 15 MINUTES LATER
The three of them are wearing bright yellow jackets covered in scratches and holes poorly patched with duct tape.

Greg’s jacket is several sizes to big while Rose’s is too small.

Rose is crossing her arms and has an impatient expression.

ROSE
Ugh. Why do we have to wear these?

DAVID
I know they don’t look the nicest, but these jackets are infused with an ectoplasmic resistance spell that could very well save your lives if a ghost attacks you.

Greg sniffs his jacket, and gives a disgusted expression.

DAVID
See, now your all ready to go inside. Everyone got their weapons?

Rose lifts her fists and her gloves become large and metallic.

ROSE
(sighing)
Yes.

Greg takes out his dagger from his pocket and has it magically transform into a sword.

ROSE
C’mon Greg let’s go.

Rose runs to the entrance of the house and Greg follows her.

DAVID
Guys, wait.

The house is surrounded by a black tornado containing a variety of lawn debris.

Rose and Greg make it right through it to the door.

David slowly follows them while trying carefully dodging flying debris and almost getting hit by some of them.

David eventually arrives at the

FRONT DOOR
where Rose is frustratingly twisting the door knob.

ROSE
(knocking on the door)
Hello, anybody in here!
(beat)
It’s locked.

David kneels down and takes off his book-bag.

DAVID
Well… we can—

Rose transforms her magical gloves into metal fists and punches through the door.

ROSE
Or this works too.

Rose holds out her hands to signal the others to enter. Greg enters first with a curious expression. David stands back up, puts his book-bag on, and enters with an angry expression Rose. Rose walks through the door last, with a smug expression.

INT. LIVING ROOM OF MANSION
The living room is filled with expensive furniture that has been torn to shreds. China and glass are shattered all over the floor. The floors themselves, which varied between hard wood, ceramic and fir carpeting were now filled with cracks and holes and had a thick black liquid oozing out of them.

Directly in front of them is a wooden staircase filled with holes, splinters and some steps completely missing.

GLASS SHATTERING can be heard as David gets out a flashlight and slowly walks forward.

Rose pushes past David to the center of the living room.

ROSE
(echoing)
Hello, anybody home?

The entire house shakes and makes a GROWLING sound. Some floor in front of Rose collapses in on itself. She quickly leaps back, landing on her butt.

She stares at the newly formed hole.

FOCUS ON:
The hole. Inside is a swirling pit of black ooze with spirits rotating around it.

ROSE (cont.)
(distracted, voice trailing)
Yo, guys, come, come look at this.

Greg walks over to Rose and looks at the hole, curious. David stays where he is, with a nervous expression.

DAVID
Guys, we shouldn’t be messing around. We gotta fix whatever is causing this.

ROSE
(distracted, trailing)
Yeah, yeah.

Rose’s eyes glance to the stairwell, and she excitedly stands up.

ROSE (cont.)
(excited)
Ooh, what’s up there.

Rose runs to the stares.

DAVID
(worried)
Rose?

David follows her.

Greg doesn’t notice them leave and stays focused on the hole.

CUT TO:
STAIRS
Rose is excitedly running up the long staircase with David following at a slow and careful place.

DAVID
(screaming)
Where are you going?

ROSE
To whatever’s at the top.

As they keep moving up, the surroundings start to get darker and the first floor becomes no longer visible.

David steps on one of the beaten up steps and it collapses, sending him falling part-way through. He holds onto the next step.

DAVID
(screaming)
Rose!

Rose turns around to go help David. She grabs his arms and starts to pull him.

ROSE (cont.)
Do you always need me to save you?

Rose is halfway through pulling up David when she notices an adult-sized spirit made of black smoke with two glowing white eyes at the top of the steps.

A smile slowly forms on her face as she stares at the spirit excited.
ROSE
Hey you can hold on for a second longer right?

Rose slowly starts to loosen his grip on David’s hand.

DAVID
Rose, what are you doing?

ROSE
I’m gonna get a good look at that monster over there.

Her grip continues to loosen as David panics and scrambles to grab onto something.

DAVID
Rose what are you doing?

ROSE
Don’t worry, I’ll be right back.

Rose lets go and runs after the spirit as David slowly starts to fall back through the staircase.

DAVID
(screaming)
Rose. ROSE!

CUT TO:
INT. LIVING ROOM
Greg is still staring intently at the crack. He stops, looks around and notices that David and Rose had left.

He looks nervous for a second, then puffs up his cheeks to make a “serious” expression. He grabs his flashlight and starts to look around.

His flashlight points to ooze coming from the cracks forming into a trail growing thicker and deeper into the house.

CRACKING GLASS is heard as he goes to follow the trail along the increasingly dark hallway. FAINT, INTELLIGIBLE WHISPERING can be heard behind him as he walks, getting louder the further he walks.

A loudly whispering spirit quickly zooms behind Greg, causing him to stop scared.

The spirit flies into a room emanating a bright white light. Greg takes a deep breath and follows it.

CUT TO:
INT. HALLWAY
Rose stops at the top of the staircase and stares at the spirit.

It’s leaving a trail of black ooze wherever it moves. It picks up a lamp and wraps it with thick black spiderwebs it shot from its mouth.

ROSE
Ew!

The spirit jolts around to face Rose and its eyes start glowing brighter.

It fires a blast of ooze towards Rose, but she moves to the side to dodge it.

Rose transforms her gloves into metal fists and charges at it.

Rose punches with her left hand, but the spirit shifts to the side to dodge. She punches a couple more times, and the spirit manages to dodge them as well. While punching, she successfully kicks the spirit to the ground.

Two black slime arms come out from the floor and grab her legs, knocking her to the ground.

She kicks her way free of them, but gets her left arm grabbed by a slime hand appearing from the wall.

The spirit flies to the other end of the hall.

ROSE
You’re not getting away that easy.

She punches the arm hard enough to make it explode into black slime, runs over to the spirit and punches it to the ground.

Rose clenches her fists together, doubles the size of her metal fists and uses it to crush the spirit, spraying black goop everywhere.

David limps up from the stares, with scratches and bruises around his body.

DAVID
Well, I finally made it out of there. No thanks to you.

ROSE
Hey, look what I did.

Rose holds up an armful of slime that was formerly the spirit in front of David.

DAVID
Who cares? You left me practically fall to my death.

ROSE
Well excuse me. I’m sorry your jealous that while you were busy bumbling through the stairs, I actually got something done.

DAVID
You know what—

SCREAMING is heard from one of the doors.

DAVID
What was that?

Rose gets an excited expression.

ROSE
Ooh, fresh meat.

She runs to it.

David pans his flashlight around the hall.

DAVID
(trailing off)
Where are you goi…

David stops the light at a door leaking black ooze.

CUT TO:
GUEST ROOM
The room contains rich, beautiful white furniture that has been smashed and thrown on the ground. The floor is scattered with children’s toys and crayon drawings.

Greg picks up some of the drawings and looks through them. All of them are of a happy stick figure family doing various activities together such as playing baseball or telling campfire stories.

While looking through the pictures a toy dump truck falls from one of the shelves. He drops the drawings as his eyes glow in excitement.

He quickly closes his eyes and shakes his head, looking guilty.

He re-opens them and focuses excitedly on more toys in the room. He looks down nervously for a second, but quickly falls down to start playing with them.

A dark patch of ooze starts to grow in front of Greg, and he moves back startled. RALPH, a young boy with glowing white eyes and a skeleton body surrounded by jet black ooze, pops out from it SCREAMING.

CUT TO:
HALLWAY
David stares at the door while Rose sniffs it like a dog. The SCREAMING stops and David gets startled.

ROSE
(shrugs)
I guess they finally died.

David kicks open the door and walks into the

BEDROOM
The floor, walls, ceiling and all the furniture are covered in more black ooze and cobwebs than any other room.

Rose makes SQUISHING noises as she excitedly scurries around the room.

David stands at the doorway shocked.

DAVID
(stuttering)
What’s going on here?

FOCUS ON:
Rose walking in front of two bodies hanging from the ceiling wrapped in black cocoons and sniffing them.

FOCUS ON:
David. A small amount of ooze is wrapping around his ankles. They SNAP apart as he slowly takes one step.

DAVID
(stuttering)
How did this even get this bad?

FOCUS ON:
Rose starts to climb the webs to reach the bodies.

She reaches the head and starts to pull out slime from their heads. She licks some of it, and continues until the faces of MR. and MRS. CLAIRE are revealed.

The two gasp for air.
Mrs. Claire
(weak, coughing)
Thank you, so much.

ROSE
Aw man! I was expecting a zombie or something.

DAVID
No need to thank us, we’re just doing out job.

ROSE
(rolling her eyes)
Ugh, barf.

DAVID
Can you tell us what happened?

MR. CLAIRE
How should we know? We were just at home minding our own business when all of this crazy stuff started happening. I bet you had something to do with this, you siblings are always up to no good.

ROSE
(nodding)
It’s true, we are always up to no good.

David gets a shocked/hurt expression.

DAVID
N-no. We didn’t have anything to do with this. We’re just here to help you.

Mr. Claire scoffs.

David grabs a yellow potion from his bag.

DAVID
(stuttering)
Don’t worry, I’ll try to get you free.

He throws it at them, causing a small yellow explosion, but still leaving the family stuck.

MR. CLAIRE
(rolling his eyes)
Well?

DAVID
Well uhm.

Rose starts to struggle within her web.

ROSE
Hey David.

DAVID
What is it?

ROSE
(excited tone)
I think I’m stuck.

David puts his hand on his forehead and sighs.

Cut to:
INT. GUEST ROOM
Greg pulls out his dagger from his pocket and holds it in front of him as it magically transforms into a sword.

Ralph’s SCREAM fades into a smile.

RALPH
AHHHHHHhhhi!

Greg stares at him confused.

RALPH
What’s your name?

GREG
Uh, Greg.

RALPH
Hi Uh Greg, my name’s Ralph.

Greg loosens his grip on his sword. Ralph pops his body out from the floor and flies over to an action figure on the other side of the room.

Greg’s eyes initially glow in excitement at seeing Ralph play, but quickly shakes his head and looks serious.

GREG
My brother sent me on a mission. I have to find out what’s haunting this house.

RAPLH
(focused on toy)
That’s cool.

GREG
Do you know what’s causing this?

RALPH
(nodding excitedly)
Yeah.

Greg’s eyes light up in excitement.

GREG
Oh.
(beat)
(quieter)
Can you tell me what it is.

RALPH
Yeah, me obviously.
(smirks)
I mean, how many other magic undead corpses did you see here?

Greg tightens his grip on his sword.

Ralph picks up one of the drawings off the floor and shows it to Greg.

RALPH (cont.)
Hey cool did you draw this?

FOCUS ON:
Greg shakes his head.

FOCUS ON:
Both of them. Ralph is holding a crayon and making another stick figure drawing of the family.

RALPH
Weird. Wonder how’d it get here?
(beat)
So, I guess you found me or whatever. What does your mission say you gotta do now?

Greg shakes nervously as he holds his sword in front of him.

GREG
(looking down, quiet)
Oh, guess I kinda have to defeat you.

Ralph nervously looks over at Greg’s sword.

RALPH
(disappointing tone)
Oh.
(beat)
(happy tone)
You wanna play first?

Greg stares at Ralph for a second. He looks around at the toys and drops his sword, grabs the dump truck and starts playing with Ralph.

The two of them start to laugh and play until a cellar hatch in the Dining Room starts CREAKING open. Ralph immediately puts down his action figure and runs to it excitedly.

INT. DINING ROOM
Greg follows him to the hatch. It’s wide open and ooze is coming from it.

Ralph jumps down and Greg slowly climbs after him.

INT. CELLAR
The cellar is filled with old boxes of expensive antiques and old jewelry that are covered in slime.

Ralph holding an old framed photo of a family while Greg is climbing down to the floor. He tosses it backwards and it SHATTERS on the floor right in front of Greg.

RALPH
(happy tone)
Nope, don’t want those memories anymore.

RALPH
Hey Uh Greg, can you do this?

Ralph picks up some slime from the floor and black aura comes out of his hands as it transforms into a spirit, similar to the one in the hallway.

GREG shakes his head.

RALPH
It’s one of the perks of being dead.

The house shakes and Claires can be heard SCREAMING.

GREG
Why are you doing this?

Ralph is standing next to a box containing kids baseball equipment.

RALPH
Cause it was fun. Haven’t you ever had fun before.

Greg looks down awkwardly.

The house shakes again, this time making an extremely loud MOAN. Debris starts falling from the ceiling.

A beam falls over Greg, but Ralph pushes him out of the causing it to crush him to slime.

Greg stares at it in shock.

The ceiling collapses further and David and Rose fall through, landing face down.

Rose, with slime still on her back, gets up and sees the jewelry and her eyes glow in excitement.

ROSE
Oh my god. I’m in heaven.

She runs around and hastily stuffs jewelry in her backpack.

Greg walks up to David and helps him stand up.

DAVID
Don’t worry I’m fine.
(looking at Rose)
Your sister looks fine too.

Rose
rolling around in a pile of gold.

Greg looks back at the pillar and releases a depressed sigh. David awkwardly puts his hand on his neck and looks Greg.

DAVID
Oh, uh, you okay?

The Claires fall through the ceiling, but because of the slime on them, they just dangle in the air.

The slime moves out from underneath the pillar and Ralph’s body jumps out from it. Greg’s eyes glow in excitement, and he runs and hugs him.

Ralph looks at Greg awkwardly.

RALPH
Like I said, being dead comes with its perks.

Ralph sees the Claires over Greg’s shoulder and flies up to them.
He tilts his head inquisitively.

RALPH
Are you my mommy and daddy?

MRS. CLAIRE
What?

Ralph looks closer at them and starts to laugh.

RALPH
Nah you look too alive to be them.

MRS. CLAIRE
Oh, uhm. I’m sorry.

RALPH
You wouldn’t happen to know where they are?
(beat)
I mean the last time I saw them, was 50 years ago when the town was burning them alive. So it’d be really helpful if you’d happen to know where they’ve been since then.

Mr. and Mrs. Claire shake their heads.

The slime around them starts bubbling and Ralph punches the wall.

RALPH
(screaming)
It’s not fair!

ROSE
staring at Ralph while holding a gold vase in her mouth.

RALPH (CONT.)
(crying)
I thought if I’d came back here, I could see them again.

Ralph holds out his hand, causing the slime around the Claires to compress around them.

MR. CLAIRE
(screaming at David)
Do something he’s gonna kill us.

David fires an arrow at Ralph’s leg.

He flies to David angrily with black smoke coming out from his eyes.

RALPH
Do you know how painful it is to be taken away from parents that love you?

DAVID
Well, no, but you still can’t do this, even if what happened was really messed up. These people had nothing to do with what you had to go through.

Ralph grabs David, flies up towards the ceiling and pins him against a wall.

RALPH
They stole our home. I have the right to be angry.

Ralph fires a powerful blast of acidic slime at David. The wall behind melts away completely.

Rose clenches her fists as Greg buries his head in Rose’s waist.

David wipes the slime from his face.

DAVID
I told you this jacket could save your lives.

Greg looks back at David relieved while Rose SCOFFS.

David places a potion at the end of his bow, aims and fires it at Ralph, knocking him to the ground.

Greg runs up to David while Rose looks at hum disinterested.

ROSE
Congratulations on being alive or whatever.

The Claires sigh in relief while Ralph sits and starts crying.

RALPH
Fine. You win.

Greg walks up to him and puts his arm around his shoulder.

RALPH
This place is all I have left of them.

Greg looks over at David.

DAVID
Look, I understand how you feel. What happened to you really sucks.
(beat)
But maybe, if you want, we could turn a blind eye to you staying here for a little while.

Ralph’s eyes light up.

RALPH
Really?

MR. CLAIRE
Wait a minute, where the heck are we suppose to stay?

RALPH
Well for the past 50 years, I’ve always wanted a family.

The Claires look at each other for a second.

MR. CLAIRE
Yeah, we’re not gonna live with a monster.

Cut to:
EXT. MANSION FRONT YARD
David, Rose and Greg are standing outside with the Claires who are holding their suitcases.

ROSE
Well, it’s been a pleasure serving you.

David and Greg walk back to the van while Rose stays behind and writes something down on a piece of paper.

MRS. CLAIRE
Where are we going to live?

ROSE
C’mon there’s plenty of other homes in this town to live in. It’s not like any of them cost more than a VCR anyway.

Rose hands them the paper.

ROSE (cont.)
Oh, and here’s your bill.

MR. CLAIRE
This is so much. How are we supposed to pay this?

ROSE
Well you should have thought about that before you got your house haunted by an undead spirit looking for revenge beyond the grave.

Rose slowly follows David and Greg to the van.

Greg turns around and sees Ralph waving at him and smiles and waves back.
