The winter scene before me offers comfort to a broken heart.
Cold Comfort

Kathleen McNamara

Winter lingers here
Snow lazes on the lake shore
Defying the arrival of Spring

The barren mountains
Hazy blue and smoke shadows
Keep their distance
Lonely sentinels of the ice crusted lake

My only companions
In the morning chill
A flock of birds resting
Along a spidery surface crack
Perhaps disappointed
By the tang of salted water

There is peace for me here
In this frozen silence
Life lurks beneath the snow
As I know love hides in my frozen heart

The small flock will leave soon
Heeding the age old call to move
Leaving me alone
Me and my broken heart
One
With this expanse of ice and snow
