|Watch me pull a rabbit from my hat:
I’ll transmute leaden thoughts to poetry
quick as Roger Bacon reading
Adam's tongue from Emerald Tablet.
I’ll break down words and ripen them
with mercury, sulfur, salt.
I'll discover new phosphorus
like Hennig Brand boiling cold fire
from his own golden water,
or isolate pure arsenic
like Albertus Magnus melting soap.
But if I miss the mark
and never prove my metal,
I’ll remember Paracelsus’ advice:
it’s dose that makes the poison.
With a lighter touch,
perhaps I’ll manage a little medicine.
