The midwest in primary season
** Image ID #2214946 Unavailable **

Grizzled,
vigorously scoured

of vermillion vibrance
zeal in coveralls,
stars and stripes
now wispy white hair.

Hunting a past,
evaporated carbon smoke,
rubbery smell of fresh paint
tractor tires,
rusty machinery inside
flakes under fingertips,
not coming to terms with the new
electrified lines of division,
buzzing

unable to hear the rustling wind
crumple leaves
like a hand
ruffling the hair
of a child

with its
crackle.

This wrinkled barn
furrows questioningly
at passers-by,

desiring to be sold
for a head-kicking sip
of corn-brewed,
aged
moonshine.
