Flash Fiction Contest Entry
John is working hard in the backyard. His father walks outside to check on his son.

“What are you doing?”

“I am building a trap.”

“Oh I see. And what are you going to trap?”

“A unicorn”

“Nice stripes, but why is there a flag on it?

“To let me know I caught something.”

“OK, well I will leave you to it.”

His dad walks back into the house and his mom asks his dad a question.

“What’s he up to?”

“He’s building a unicorn trap.”

“What happens when he realizes that it doesn’t work?”

“Well, I don’t know. Actually, you know what, I think I have an idea. I am going out. I will be back soon.

His dad returns with a bag in his hand and pulls something out.

“Take a look I bought a stuffed unicorn. When he goes to bed I will place it in the trap. What do you think?”

“Not bad. It might actually work. But be careful.”

The next day John goes outside to check his trap. He sees a unicorn in the trap and eating grass. He runs back inside.

“It worked!! It worked!! I caught a unicorn!! Come, take a look.”

He runs outside and his parents follow him. They stand by the door and smile as they watch their son play with the stuffed unicorn.

“Can we keep him? I promise I will take care of him.”

His parents look at each other and laugh.

“Sure thing, son.”

The two of them go inside. The boy watches them leave then turns his head to the unicorn.

“Hi, my name is John. What's yours?”

The unicorn answered.

“My name is Thomas.”
