Hernandez put the Jays ahead 1-0 with a home run at the top of the first inning.
The Jays went up 3-0 at the top of the fourth inning with solo home runs by Rowdy Tellez and Danny Jansen.
In the bottom of the fourth, Washington's Kurt Suzuki drove in Eric Thames with a RBI double.
At the top of the fifth inning, Hernandez hit his second home run.
Hernandez went two for five at the plate and had two RBIs.
Suzuki went two for four at the plate and had a RBI.
Toronto's starting pitcher, Trent Thornton, went four innings, giving up eight hits, an earned run, two walks, and struck out three batters.
National's starter, Anibal Sanchez, went five innings, giving up six hits, four earned runs, a walk, and struck out seven batters.
