Scented Christmas memories.
Holiday Scented Memories

Kathleen McNamara

Down from the cabinets
they came one by one.
All my favorite spices,
baking's such fun.

Cinnamon, nutmeg,
ginger and cloves,
such lovely aromas
to tickle the nose.

From the kitchen I saw
the Christmas tree shine.
The spices compete
with the warm smell of the pine.

My son tended the fireplace,
the logs needed a poke.
A bit of a down draft
adds the scent of wood smoke.

Carols played softly
as I rolled out the dough.
Tracing the cardboards
I cut house shapes just so.

The gingerbread baked.
The scent in the air,
filling the downstairs
and drifting upstairs.

The house parts were cooling
on large baking racks.
The kids started begging
for a big cookie snack.

The time then came.
We'd a house to create.
The little ones so excited.
They hardly could wait.

Icing and candies,
on roof tops and doors,
gumdrops and peppermints
and a chimney of s'mores.

A note printed for Santa,
he needed to see.
Just how much help
they all gave to me.
