Old contest entry. Reposting for additional feedback
At a lovely restaurant, Sam and Kim are eating dessert. At one-point Kim sees something in her cake. She pulls it out and shows it to Sam. Sam tries to say something, but Kim interrupts him.

“Don’t say a word. Look, you are a nice guy and all, but we have been going out for only six months. I would like to take things a little slower. Maybe in another six months, at least. I don’t want to rush things, but I still appreciate the thought.”

At that moment another man sitting at a table near them interrupts her.

“That’s actually mine. The waiter gave it to the wrong table.”

Kim gives the man the ring. He asks his girlfriend the question. She says yes and everyone in the restaurant cheers. When the excitement has died down, Sam makes a comment.

“So…I was about to say, that was not mine. But good to know where you stand with the whole marriage thing.”

“Um…so how about this cake?”

“Yes, it’s good cake.”

While still eating the cake, Sam pulls out his phone. He texts his dad that the proposal is off. Back at Sam’s house his dad reads the text out loud. A bunch of Sam and Kim’s friends get upset and start to head out.

“Did he say why?” said Sam’s mom.

“Nope. Just said it’s a no go.”

“Well, I am actually glad, six months seems too early. Always thought he should wait longer and get to know her more. Don’t want to end up making a mistake.”

“I don’t think six months is too early. If you remember, we got engaged after six months.”

With a contempt face she replies as she walks out the door.

“I'll be in the car.”
