How mindfulness helped me to emerge from the darkness.
TRANSITIONING

I can’t rewrite my childhood.
Believe me, though. I’ve tried.
I used to grieve for what I’d lost.
So many nights I’d cried.
I used to binge to dull the pain--
the past still ached inside.

Chorus:
That’s when I changed my focus.
Though the past still left its mark,
with my mind set in the moment,
I transitioned from the dark.

When the ‘rents no longer ruled me
then I needed to adjust.
Though I had no self-assurance
and good reason to mistrust,
it was time for self-reflection,
for survival was a must.

Chorus:
So that’s when I changed my focus.
Though the scars still left their mark,
with my mind set in the moment
I transitioned from the dark.

I’ll admit the mental practice
was, at first. a little strange.
But by turning my attention
from the things I could not change
both my outlook and priorities
began to rearrange.

Chorus:
Because I changed my focus.
Though the scars still left their mark,
with my mind set in the moment
I transitioned from the dark.

Granted, shadows still pass over
to remind me of the past,
but with breaths and redirection
desolation doesn’t last.

Chorus:
Because I changed my focus.
Though the scars still left their mark,
with my mind set in the moment
I transitioned from the dark.
