Your coffee pot can save the day in more ways than one!
|Desperate times may often call for desperate measures. There may come a time when you do not have access to a stove and/or cooking outside is out of the question, but you still have hungry mouths to feed. Your coffee pot may be just the answer!
For the purposes of this article, we are talking about a standard, generic type coffee pot. Not your single cup makers and not your fancy brewers either. Just your old school, plain Jane coffee pot.
Oatmeal or other quick-cook hot cereal such as Gritz or cream of wheat - ensure your coffee pot is nice and clean, no leftover grounds, and run water or milk through the pot. Use the very hot milk or water to make your hot, instant cereals.
Heat up any canned vegetable. Open your can and drain. Place the vegetables in your pot and add about three our four cups of water, depending on how many cans of vegetables you added. If wanted, add your seasonings and butter on vegetables and let the hot water or broth fill the pot.
Instant rice or potatoes. Add the amount of water needed as per the directions on the back of the box plus about 3 tablespoons extra to the water holder in your pot. Let the water filter down into the pot. Then, when the pot is filled with hot water, add your rice or mashed potatoes. For rice, you will want to cover the pot and let stand for about 5 minutes. You can also make boxed stuffing mixes this way as well.
Hotdogs can be heated up and cooked in your coffee pot. Simply fill with enough water to cover the franks. Place the franks in the coffee pot and turn the pot on.
Ramen noodles with or without vegetables. - Fill the water tank with the amount of water recommended per block of noodles you are making. Add seasonings and dry noodles to the pot. At this time, you can also add a small can of vegetables or frozen veggies to the coffee pot basket...When done, the veggies will be hot without being soggy.
Frozen vegetables can be placed in the coffee pot along with your seasonings and butter. Use water or broth to perk over them and heat.
Fresh greens such as spinach, mustard greens, collard greens and kale can all be wilted and cooked tenderly by your coffee pot. Simply put the leaves in the pot along with your seasonings. In the basket, where you normally add the coffee, place half a stick of butter, half a small finely minced onion, and minced garlic. Let the water drip down and cover the leaves and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes, gently mixing the greens occasionally. Once they are wilted and tender, you can drain off the water, and dump the cooked onion and garlic from the basket into your greens.
While cooking with your coffee pot is not something I'd choose do to for fun, it is something I've had to do in the past and I have actually cooked each of the meals recommended above. It takes a little patience, a little creativity but it will get the job done.
