It's that spooky time of year once again, and Halloween is now quickly approaching us.
It's that spooky time of year once again, and Halloween is now upon us. The children will soon be out making their rounds in search of that tasty Halloween candy. They may be converging at stores in a shopping mall, participating at a Halloween trunk-or-treat program at an area church which are growing in popularity, or even come knocking on your very own front door. What ever way they choose to pursue their quest for candy, you will almost always hear the magical words - "Trick or Treat". Here are just a few interesting facts about Halloween that I stumbled across, that I wanted to share with you all.

From carving pumpkins to trick or treating Halloween is not just about dressing up in fancy costumes and asking for candy! It's a holiday with a deep history in both folklore and customs. The celebration of Halloween dates back to 4000 B.C.. Originally Halloween began as a Celtic festival in Ireland, which is believed to be Halloween's birth place, when it marked the Celtic New Year, and years down the road slowly evolved into an candy-giving event for children. After Christmas, Halloween is the second highest commercialized holiday in America.

Here's a few interesting facts about our dear friend the bat on Halloween. A bat's feet are relaxed as they hang upside down, and a bat must exert energy to let go. The term blind as a bat is a very misleading phrase, because all bats can see, and fruit bats have even better eyesight than people. One out of every five mammals in the world is a bat, and finally bats are the only mammals on this planet that can fly.

Witches, who can also fly with the aid of a broom, weren't always considered evil. The word witch is derived from the Old English term 'wicce', meaning a wise woman. Wiccan were honored in their day, and in modern times beliefs about witches have changed greatly throughout history. Just like it is once again this year, dressing up in a witch costume is normally the number one choice for little girls who are trick or treating on Halloween. Plenty of witches turn out every year for the world's largest Halloween parade which is held annually in New York City.

Halloween is full of interesting dates all throughout history. It's very rare for a full moon to occur during Halloween. Full moons have occurred during Halloween only in the years 1925, 1944, 1955, 1974, and there's one predicted in the year 2020. More candy is sold on October 28th than on any other single day of the year. The great magician Harry Houdini died on Halloween, at the age of 52, in the year 1926 as a result of an appendicitis brought on by three stomach punches. The northern Europeans have a spring equivalent to Halloween, and it's called Walpurgis Nightt's celebrated on April 30th.

The largest pumpkin in the world weighs in at a little over 2000 lbs., at 2,009 pounds, and was grown in 2012. Boston Massachusetts holds the record for the most Jack O' Lanterns ever lit at one time, which was 30,128 pumpkins. Around Halloween time pumpkins are called Jack O' Lanterns, and they weren't always made out of pumpkins. At one time in Ireland Jack O' Lanterns use to be made out of rutabagas, potatoes, turnips and beets. Tasty! Jack O’ Lanterns are said to be named after a stingy man named Jack who was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths after he tricked the devil. Happy Halloween!
