When darkness overshadows a light, another light restores the former.
I cannot breathe the sacred air
of precious time and space
and yet avoid the deadly snare,
nor slow the frenzied pace.

It seems that shadows lie in wait
beyond the daily joy,
where contrast is the tasty bait
and change, the simple ploy.

I see the darkness falling on
this heart of love and light.
I feel the coldness smite the pawn!
I watch the dying knight!

I take his battle-sword in hand;
His standard upward raise!
And doomed to die in foreign land,
I enter his melees.
