Eighty-Two Years âYouâre a jerk!â âNo, youâre a jerk! I did everything I was supposed to do!! âBadly!â âAs if you could do it better!â âA six-year-old could do better!â âThen you must be five!!â âWhat is the problem here?â Mrs. Glenn stopped the conversation glaring. âYou two are out of control!â âHe started it!â James yelled. Randel just sat there, frozen. âStarted what?â Mrs. Glenn asked, now in a quieter voice because every kid in the classroom had stopped to listen. âRandel?â Knowing everyone was listening, Randel very quietly asked, âCan we go out into the hall for this?â Mrs. Glenn took the hint, saying in a louder voice, âOut in the hall you two! Class, continue what youâre doing, Iâll be in the hall for a few minutesâŠâ out they went. âSo, whatâs up?â she asked the two boys. Randel started. âHe insisted we do the project on cupcakes!â âThat sounds good⊠Did you have a problem with cupcakes?â âNo⊠Yes! WellâŠâ Then James said, âheâs never had a cupcakeâŠâ âWhat?â âAccording to Randel heâs never had a cupcake! How could he never have a cupcake??â Mrs. Glenn looked at Randel, âReally? Youâve never had a cupcake?â âYes, I mean no. Iâve never had a cupcakeâŠâ Youâre eleven years old and youâve never had a cupcake?â âWeâre organic, and sugar free. We do have muffins!â Randel said. âWhy didnât you tell me that?â James said. âI thought youâd laugh at me. Other kids always laughâŠâ âHey, Iâm allergic to chocolate! You should see how I get treated when I donât want chocolate!â Randel laughed. âSo, I guess you two can come up with something thatâs not chocolate and not cupcakes?â Mrs. Glenn asked. Both boys laughed, and life was good again. They stayed best friends for the next eighty-two years. |
