Why Don’t We Talk Anymore

Why don’t we talk anymore,
when once our words flew unafraid?
Now you carry a stranger’s shadow
His whispered lies wrapped around your heart.

He spoke behind your back of faults I’ve never owned,
Painted rumors I could name if you would only ask.
But you never asked, you never knocked
on the door of my side of the story.

Instead, you swallowed rumor like sweet poison,
Tasted only that bright sugar-coating
Never paused to question its maker,
Never held it to the light of our trust.

I stood ready at the door of you,
offering truth laid plain on my tongue
An open page, a chance to clear the air,
To sift honey from the sting.

But you turned away, lips sealed tight,
afraid to challenge what you’d heard.
In that silence, thick and unspoken
I felt the fault line deepen beyond repair.

So here we are, two distant souls,
linked by what was said, not by what we know.
Better to walk apart in daylight’s truth
than stay bound in a stranger’s lies.
