A couple watch TV. Contest entry. |
“Anything interesting on the news?” I asked my wife as I came downstairs. She was sitting on the living room couch, snacking on pretzels. I grabbed a couple and sat beside her. “You mean besides oceans flooding coastal towns? No, not really.” “What towns are being flooded?” “There are several along the east coast. One of them is Amity Cove.” “Wait, didn’t we go on vacation there once? It was our fifth anniversary, right?” “Eighth, actually. It was right after you started your new job at the bank. Remember, we walked along the beach and saw all the flowers blooming out of rocks.” “Yes, I remember that. Isn’t that where I lost my hat, what with the winds blowing everything away?” “No, that was our twelfth anniversary, when we were on the beach in California.” “Ah yes, I remember it well.” She turned and gave me a sardonic look, and I chuckled. “Okay,” she said. “We are not doing any singing tonight.” “Why not? It’s the perfect night for it, since it’s raining outside. We could be singing in the rain.” “Let’s not and say we did. Besides, it could be dangerous what with spaceships falling from the skies.” “You mean that Russian one? I heard earlier it landed in the Indian ocean, so we should be safe enough. Come on, it’ll be fun,” I said, pulling her to her feet. “You’re not serious?” “That’s the point, I’m not serious. Really, when’s the last time we did something spontaneous and fun? It was well before we hit our six…” “Don’t say it!” my wife said, holding up her hand. I sighed theatrically. “Fine, not since we both hit the first decade starting with an “S”. Let’s live a little, while we still can.” “You are ridiculous,” she said, but she was laughing as I pulled her towards the door. I opened it and we looked outside. It wasn’t just raining, it was pouring. It had gone from cats and dogs to tigers and wolves. Lightning briefly turned the night into day, and thunder rattled the windows. “You know,” I said. “Singing indoors is fun too.” “I was just thinking the same thing. How about “Row, row, row your boat”? We can even sing it in the round.” So that’s what we did, as we stood with our arms around each other and watched the rain come down. |
