The Best Surprise Ever “Something’s here!” five-year-old Jenny yelled. “What?” her mother asked. “I don’t know!” Jenny yelled excitedly. “What are you talking about then?” Mum asked. “A truck came by and stopped, then the driver put something on the front step!” “Oh, huh… I can’t remember ordering anything… I wonder what it is?” “I’ll get it!” “No, no, I want to see it first. The driver probably just left it at the wrong house. We weren’t expecting anything.” Off they went to the door. There on the front porch was a brown box. “Let me see who it’s really for…” Mom said, walking over to the box. The label said ‘Jenny Jones and Mom Jones’ and their address. There was no return address on the package. “Well, I guess it is for us,” Mom said, confused. “Let’s take it inside!” “No,” Mom said, “let’s open it right here on the porch, since we don’t know what it is, or who sent it.” “Why?” “Well maybe it’s something that smells funny or something.” Mom said, still feeling uneasy about not knowing what it was, nor who sent it. “I just want to know what it is before we bring it in the house.” “OK!” Very carefully she ripped away the paper and peeked in at the box. It had a lot of small holes in it. Suddenly the box moved a little! “Get back!” Mom yelled; there’s something alive in that box! She grabbed Jenny and ran in the house, immediately calling the police. The squad car came quickly. Two policemen carefully walked to the box, and slowly opened it. Then they laughed. “There’s a note,” he handed it to Mom. It was from Dad, surprising Jenny with a kitten! Dad never did live that down, even though it was the best surprise ever! |
