The Horror

“Don’t look at me.” The whisper in his ear pleaded. Fiona!

Lloyd Monk fought the urge to do what she asked him not to. He kept walking and felt her move up beside him. But she didn’t take his hand. Almost against his will, he snuck a look.

She was heavily veiled, and he couldn’t penetrate it.

“My darling, whatever is the matter?” Lloyd asked earnestly.

“I simply can’t discuss it now. Please take me to a doctor!”

With both fear and alacrity, he made his way to her physician’s office. He sat in the waiting room on pins and needles. Could the famous specialist help her?

The man himself came out to speak to Lloyd. He was as pale as a ghost and his eyes were terrified.

“Fiona must leave at once to a remote sanitarium. It is her only chance! She has asked me to tell you not to follow her. She has freed you from your attachment to her.”

“Tell me what’s wrong with her? I demand to know!”

“Doctor patient confidentiality prevents me from saying more. Accept her plea, for your own good.”

Lloyd caught a cab home, brooding and confused.

“Why must I suddenly give up my beloved?” he asked himself. He decided to sleep on it.

He fell into an exhausted sleep after what seemed like hours. Familiar singing roused him. It was coming from his open window. He rushed over. There floating in the air outside the window, was a familiar form.

“My darling, my heart! I cannot live without you after all!”

He blinked his eyes and Fiona stood beside him.

“Are you feeling better, my love?” he asked as he took her in his arms.

“I will be soon,” she whispered as she sunk her fangs into his neck.
