Elton knew right away just what he wanted to do. 300 words.

Unique Assignment

“Do you have a question, Elton?” Ms. Nolan asked one of the waving hands in her class.

“Does it matter what kind of book it is?”

“No, as long as you draw illustrations for it.”

Elton grinned at this answer and set to work. When the class was over, he put away his work and moved on to the next classroom. By the end of the day, he was really tired but knew he wouldn’t sleep.

Ideas for his book, teemed in his brain. As soon as he got off the bus, Elton raced into the house and up to his room. He tried several ideas for his book but couldn’t get it the way he wanted it.

Balls of paper littered the floor around his desk and overflowed his waste basket. At long last, he got it right; size, shape, theme came out perfect. He assembled it and put it in his backpack with relief.

Back in Ms. Nolan’s class, he waited for his turn. Finally, it came.

“I decided to make a flip book. It can have any words you want to put with it and it is fully illustrated,” he explained as he passed it around.

“Wow, this is a real adventure.”

“I didn’t know you could draw so well!”

“Amazing!”

Elton finally got his sample book back and passed it to Ms. Nolan for grading. She added to her pile with a smile.

“I hope she gives it a good grade,” he told himself that night in bed just before falling into an exhausted sleep.

When he saw his grade at the next day’s class, his heart leaped.

“My first ever A plus plus!” he said with pride and wonder.

“I knew you had it in you, Elton. You just needed the right idea.”
