Carl and Ellie stop for a drink after attending a free lecture. 300 words |
The Lectern Series “I didn’t understand a word of that,” Ellie complained as they left the hall. Carl, of course, said nothing. He had found over the years that it made him seem more intelligent, or at least less embarrassed than admitting he didn’t understand any of it either. “Well, at least they’re free and they get us out of the house some evenings.” Carl nodded. He could think of other things that would get him out of the house that he was sure he would enjoy more than these free lectures. Ellie nattered away about all and sundry. From long practice, he quickly tuned her out. When he tuned back in again, she was talking about the neighbors. “That woman thinks she’s a gift to all men!” Carl would have agreed with this sentiment if he wanted the silent treatment for a few days. It never lasted long, since Ellie believed in letting him and the world at large why she was mad at him. “Do you want to stop for a drink, honey?” he said at last. “Why not!” was her surprise answer. When she saw The Paper Umbrella Lounge, she insisted they go there. The place was pleasantly full, probably because it was a weeknight. “Don’t look now,” Ellie whispered. He turned to see where she was pointing. “I told you not to look!” It’s our neighborhood sexpot! She’s not with her husband. Doesn’t surprise me.” Carl decided it didn’t surprise him, because he knew they weren’t married. “Don’t we know the guy she’s with?” Ellie said. “I think it’s the guy who gave us the lecture tonight,” Carl told her. “But I noticed a wedding ring on him,” his wife persisted. “Seems to me, he’s a fine one to talk about “How to Stay Married” right?” |
